Warm up Activities
1. In this unit you’re going to read about three persons. They have already
become a policeman, a student and a teacher of Law. They have their own
lifestyle and duties. What do you think they are?
Reading
2a. Read the following statements then look through the text and correct
them if they are false.
a. Rob Brighton works at the Los Angeles Police Department.
b. His duty is to make uniform patrol in the district and to help detectives with

The police dynasty
Rob Brighton is a policeman. He is 23 years old. He was born in California.
Now Rob works at the California Police Department. Policemen need to be brave and
strong, as their work is often dangerous, hardworking and responsible, but very
balanced and reasonable. Rob is a patrol officer. His duty is to make uniform patrol in
the district and to help detectives with their follow-up investigations. Sometimes Rob
works on the day watch and other times on the night watch. Rob likes to do police
work. He wants to become a sergeant, so he takes police sciences classes at night
school twice a week. Rob is married. His wife Ann is 3 years younger than her
husband. She is a college graduate but she doesn't work at present. Ann looks after
the children, a boy of 4 and a girl of 2. Ann thinks that in future she will get a job and
work as a schoolteacher. Rob’s father was also a policeman. He graduated from a
police academy, then worked as an investigator. After twenty years of service he
retired. Now he lives with his wife in his little cottage 60 miles from the city. When
Rob finishes his tour of duty, he returns home where he helps his wife, plays with his
children and has a rest. If he is not busy with his studies, he usually watches TV,
reads books or meets with his friends. On his days off Rob and his wife often go
shopping or visit their parents. “I enjoy my lifestyle greatly. I have a lovely family
and a promising career. What else could I ask for?” he says.

5a. Read the text about Vlad Simonov. Think of its missing title; explain
the words in bold then circle the correct answer.
His name is Vlad. He is 20 years old. He was born in Volgograd. After
secondary school he worked as a patrolman for 2 years. He made patrol in his
district. Sometimes he worked on the day watch and other times on the night watch.
He thinks the work of a militiaman is difficult but interesting. Now he is a student of
the Volgograd Academy of the Internal Affairs Ministry of the Russian
Federation. He wants to become an investigator so he studies law. Vlad believes that
to be a good investigator one shouldn’t have only dedication, teamwork skills and
ability to work to tight deadlines but legal expertise.
He isn’t married and lives with his parents. His mother doesn't work. She is on
pension. His father is a judge at a people's court. He likes his work very much.
Vlad’s got a brother, Nick. He’s five years older than Vlad. He’s a specialist in
crime detection in the scientific laboratory.
In his free time Vlad goes to the gym twice a week, walks a lot and or helps his
parents. At weekends he visits his grandparents or goes fishing with his brother. “I
like the life I lead because my dream comes true. I’m proud of my success and hope
it will continue for many years to come,” he says.

Join the police force!
Are you a person who doesn’t enjoy the thought of being behind a
desk from 9 to 5, answering the phone and making coffee? If that’s the
case, you may join the police force. The police offer excellent
opportunities for graduates and are keen to promote intelligent young
people within the service. You’d start by serving a minimum of two years
as a constable, mostly patrolling the streets. You should be prepared for
shift work which will play havoc with your social life. But if you cope
with all the challengers you will be ready for promotion, first to sergeant
and then to inspector. This is a position of leadership that involves a lot
of difficulties. Also you’ll have a lot of responsibility, however the police
service is very noble and necessary.

The Long Distance Teacher
Irina, 22, is a schoolteacher. She lives in Volgograd region, in the small town
of Krasnoslobodsk, but she works in Volgograd.
Every day from Monday to Friday she leaves home at 6.00 in the morning and
takes a bus to the ferry station. Then she catches the ferry to Volgograd, changes for a
trolley bus and arrives at the law lyceum at 7.30. She teaches Law and History from
8.00 in the morning to 13.30 in the afternoon, and then she leaves lyceum. She thinks
that the person of her profession needs to be patient and persistent, to have creativity,
dedication and ability to explain things.
She arrives home at 9.30 in the evening. What does she do from 13.30 in the
