Letter 1
Many people today believe that getting a well-paid job is essential, while
finishing school or university is not. I strongly disagree with this view for a number
of reasons.
First of all, education is the key to development. Doctors, scientists and
teachers use their education to advance society. Without them, there would be no
cures for diseases and no progress in technology.
What is more, a good education can help to achieve economic success.
Businesses would not be successful without educated people to run them. Success
and financial reward go hand in hand. As a result, highly trained people are often also
better-paid people.
Of course, there are people who argue that an education is not necessary in
order to make lots of money. It is true that some highly paid jobs do not require a
high level of education, but they are rare. What is more, a good education offers more
rewards than just the ability to make money.
All in all, I believe that although money is important in life, it should not be
given more emphasis than education. After all, with education comes knowledge and
without this individuals and societies cannot advance.
Letter 2
I don't agree with this opinion.
Earning money is important, that's true. I often work in the summer myself to
make some extra money. Going to school is more important, though, I think. We can't
do without a school diploma or university degree if we want to lead good lives. But
you need lots of money too. Some people say that you can be rich without having a
proper education. They believe that money opens doors for you and all you have to
do is know the tricks. But you'd better not take them seriously. Besides, education
ensures us that science progresses. It is essential for the development of a country in
general.
In my opinion, nothing beats education. It is better to be clever and poor than
rich and stupid.

A CHALLENGING JOB
Peace Corps is a federal US organization set up in 1961. According to popular
legend, the idea first originated when John F. Kennedy was giving a late night speech
to a group of college graduates. The US President said to the young people, "Could
you devote up to two years of your life to really doing something important in

another country? Could you sacrifice your own plans, go to a strange place and help
people solve their problems?" A surprising amount of young college graduates
responded to the challenge, and Peace Corps came into being.
Today there are regional offices all over the USA. Peace Corps trains and sends
volunteers abroad to work with people of developing countries on projects for
technological, agricultural, and educational improvement. For example, in African
countries there is a great demand for specialists in agriculture, sanitation and health
awareness. In Russia, specialists in the English language are needed, as well as a
small amount of business advisers, joint enterprise managers, entrepreneurs.
Peace Corps volunteers do not go to any place of their own accord. The
country has to ask for a specialist. Then the local offices search through their lists of
applicants and advise that volunteers go to a certain country. Usually volunteers are
expected to stay on their job for two years. But if a volunteer feels unhappy, cannot
cope with the climate or the general living conditions, or if there develops a
threatening situation, they can go back home before the two-year term is out.
To qualify for the job, Peace Corps volunteers have to answer certain
requirements: they have to be of age; they have to be committed to the job; they have
to be a college graduate, or to have an extensive experience in the chosen field.

Writing
• Study the following information
We write letters of application when we want to apply for a job or a course of
study. It is important to include only the information that is relevant, and to use a
suitable style, formal or semi-formal.
The first paragraph mentions the reason for writing. It can also include the
name of the job/course you are applying for and where you saw it advertised.
The main body paragraphs can include:
• what work experience you have
• your academic qualifications
• the personal qualities which make you suitable for the job or course
What you write in the main body depends on what is written in the rubric. You
should link your ideas with appropriate linking words and phrases.
In your final paragraph, you can:
• summarise the points in the main body
• thank the person for considering your application
• ask the person to consider you for the job/course
• mention the possibility of further communication
Present tenses are normally used but some past tenses can be used to describe
your past experience, (e.g. I finished school in 2003 and joined a computer course,
where I obtained a diploma in information Technology.). You may also use future
constructions (e.g. I intend to continue my studies in London and I will soon be
starting voluntary work in order to …).
