Предисловие
Данное пособие предназначено для студентов экономического факультета, изучающих английский язык по направлению подготовки «Менеджмент». Оно также может быть использовано студентами, обучающимися по направлению подготовки «Экономика» и по специальности «Экономика и управление на предприятии (таможня)».
Цель пособия – знакомство с базовой профессиональной лексикой в сфере менеджмента.
В пособие вошли 15 мини-текстов
на английском языке, раскрывающих определенные понятия в сфере управления. Каждый текст сопровождается англо-русским словарем и серией заданий, способствующих усвоению учебного материала.
В конце пособия приведены упражнения на повторение пройденных тем, а также контрольные задания и тексты для проверки усвоения лексического материала. Контрольные задания, включающие предложения для перевода с английского
языка на русский язык и с русского языка на английский, можно использовать как поэтапно, по мере прохождения материала, так и на заключительном этапе контроля.

Management
Modern societies are made up of all kinds of organizations, such as
companies, government departments, schools, libraries, hospitals, etc.
In all these organizations there are people whose responsibility is to use the resources of their organization effectively and economically to achieve its objectives. Their title can be different but the functions they perform are the same.
The term “management” refers both to the set of activities and to the group of people carrying out these activities.

Functions of management (I)
Management carries out the following basic functions:
- planning
- organizing
- leading (or directing)
- controlling (or coordinating)
Any managerial system at any managerial level is characterized in terms
of performing these functions.

Planning is considered the first management function because the other
functions depend on it. The planning function includes defining the goals and deciding how these goals can best be achieved.
Organizing, the second management function, is connected with
organizing (allocating) resources (land, capital, labour) to achieve these goals in

an optimum way. It clarifies what must be done and by whom. So, it directly deals with staffing – choosing the proper person for the job.

the English words – aim, goal, objective, target (цель, задача) are very close synonyms. But aim and goal tend to be more general, objective and target – more specific, with target being the most measurable.

Functions of management (II)
Management is often defined as “getting things done through others”. As the job of managers implies directing activities of others, the leading
function is very important. It consists of setting directions for the organization and its personnel and influencing people to follow this direction. This function also includes motivating subordinates, resolving conflicts.

The fourth function, controlling, is monitoring how well a company’s
objectives are met and adjusting processes to reach the goals effectively.
