Пояснительная записка
Учебно-методическое пособие “History of the English

THE SUBJECT OF THE HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH
LANGUAGE. ITS AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The Subject Matter

Any language as well as any other social or natural phenomena is never static. Its phonetic and graphical structures are constantly subjected to gradual changes which are caused by external or internal factors. In the 1st case the language is influenced by factors that lie outside the language (extra-linguistic factors) such as social changes, wars, cultural contents, economic tides and so on. For example, during the Norman invasion in 1066 the English language adopted a number of French words. Thus the vocabulary of the English language was replenished and this change was caused by an external factor: the invasion of the Frenchmen on the territory of British Isles. In the 2nd case the language is influenced by purely linguistic factors, that is to say, the driving force lays within the language itself. (For example, findan (OE) – fīnden (ME) - find (MnE)). In OE in the 7th century the vowels found before –nd were lengthened. Just the word findan with the short [i] in the root came to be pronounced as [fi:nden] with a long root vowel. And later in the Modern English period the long vowel [i:] changed into [ai] – find. These changes were not connected with either the events in the history of the nation, they were caused by inner linguistic factors. Thus, defining the subject of the history of the English language we are to say that it’s constituted by the development of the language and driving force of its development. When speaking about the changes in phonetic or grammatical system in English or the changes in the word stock, we are to bear in mind that very few of them are independent. The majority of such changes are interdependent and a change in one of the spheres of the language drives as a rule at the change in another sphere. For
6
example, when William the Conqueror invaded Britain the French language (the native language of William the Conqueror) spread all over England and the English language in its turn adopted a considerable number of French words. Among these words there were such which contained the sounds [ʃ, Ʒ] and [tʃ,
dƷ] in their phonetic structure, and the English language which hadn’t had these sounds in its phonetic system had to acquire
them or adopt them and make them the elements of its sound structure.

The Aims and the Objectives

Another question which arises while studying the History of the English language is the question of its aims and objectives.
There’re quite a number of them and the most important may be
defined as follows:
1) A systematic study of the English language development
enables the student to acquire a more profound understanding of the language of today. A teacherphilologist should be able to explain many peculiarities of the language which seem to be incomprehensive from
the point of view of the modern language. For example: - Why the nouns like man, woman in the plural don’t have ending -s;
- why the spelling of the words like daughter,
know contains mute consonants;
- why the spelling ea indicates different sounds in
such words as speak, great, bear, heart, heard. An answer to these and many other questions can be found only when looking back into the history of the language.
2) The next aim of the subject consists in discovering the
rules of the evolution of the language as a system. That is as into connection of phonetic, grammatical and lexical development and not as a disconnected chain of changes which results in a new quality of the language.
7
3) The History of the English language is also aimed at
culturing students to establish ties between the history of the English people and the development of their language.
THE PERIODS IN THE HISTORY
OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
The history of the English language covers roughly 15 centuries, the history of the written period covers 12 centuries. This is, of course, a very long period of time and for the sake of convenience linguists distinguish 3 main stages (periods) in the history of the English language, namely Old English (OE), Middle English (ME) and Modern English (MnE). The English scholar Henry Sweet (1854-1912) characterized these stages in his “New English Grammar”. He proposed the following division of the history of English according to the state of the unstressed endings.
V OE X-XI ME XIV-XV MnE XXI
sinӡan singen sing sunu sone son hwila while while
1) The 1st period, Old English (OE) – the period of full
endings. Any vowel can be found in an unstressed ending.
2) The 2nd period, Middle English (ME) – the period of
levelled endings. Unstressed vowels are reduced to the neutral [ə], in writing this vowel is represented by the letter e.
3) The 3rd period, new English (Modern English) (MnE) –
the period of lost endings. The ending is lost as the result of evolution.
8
According to professor Boris Aleksandrovich Ilyish the dates of the written periods are OE 700-1100, ME 1100-1500, MnE 1500 – up to now. Henry Sweet distinguished early MnE 15001660 and late MnE beginning with 1660.
Each period of the English language development has its own characteristics.
The Alphabets and the Written Monuments of OE
It is quite natural that the main source for study of the History of the English language is represented by written records. The written records in OE are rather numerous, they represent different kinds of literature, different dialects and two alphabets.
The written documents of OE are divided into two main parts: monuments of runic writing and those of Latin writing. The earliest of them is runic alphabet. Each sound was denoted by a sign which was called a rune. Nowadays runes seem very unusual. The runic alphabet was widely spread among Germanic peoples, especially in Scandinavia. The runic alphabet was a variety of the Latin alphabet used for writing on wood, stone and other hard materials. There are very few monuments of the runic writing nowadays. Only two of them are well-known: Ruthwell Cross and the Runic Casket. Ruthwell Cross is a religious poem engraved on a tall stone cross, found near the village of Ruthwell in South-East Scotland. The other, a Runic Casket, is a short poem written on a whalebone, which was found in France. It is in the British Museum now. Both these texts are probably of the 9th century and they represent the so-called Northumbrian dialect.
Later when the Anglo-Saxons came in contact with the culture of the Romans the runic alphabet came to be more and more seldom used as the Latin writing was used instead. As the OE sound system differed materially from the Latin one, the Latin alphabet proved insufficient to denote all the OE sounds.
9
To fill this gap some letters were borrowed from the runic alphabet. For example, the letter Ʒ (yoth) denoted several sounds
[g], [j]. The rune Þ (thorn) denoted two sounds [Ɵ], [ð]
depending on its position in a word.
Among prose works written in the Latin alphabet we should mention, first of all, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (the WestSaxon dialect). It is a year-for-year account of the events in the OE history starting from 787.
Many written documents belonging to the OE prose are connected with the name of King Alfred. The work entitled “King Alfred’s Orosius” gives us historical and geographical information available to the author. It is the translation of the
work “The History against Heathens” by Spanish monk Orosius
Paulus. But it contains some narrations made by King Alfred himself. This narration tells us about the history of the English people, their culture, traditions and life.
All the OE poetry is represented by a number of songs and
poems. For example, “Caedmon Hymn”, “Bede’s Dying Song” and “Beowulf”.
The most famous work of poetry is “Beowulf” by an
unknown writer. It tells us about a hero who fought a seamonster Grendel and killed it. In the second part he fought a dragon that possessed vast treasure, he killed this dragon but during the battle he got poisoned and died.

Germanic Languages and their Peculiarities

The English language is one of the languages of a large system which is called the Indo-European system of languages. This system consists of several groups inside each of which the relations between the languages are stronger, the linguistic laws can be easily traced. The relations between the groups entering the Indo-European system can be also traced but it is not so easy as it is within one group.
10
English is one of the languages of the Indo-European system which enters the Germanic group of languages. The modern Germanic group of languages consists of such languages as German, English, Dutch, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian. The Germanic languages are very ancient. They were spoken in Northern Europe. The ancient Germans (or Teutons) are first mentioned by Pitheas, a Greek historian geographer of the 4th c BC who made a sea voyage to the Baltic Sea. Then in the 1st c BC the Roman general, statesman and writer
Julius Caesar in his ‘Commentaries on one war in Gaul’
(«Commentarii de bello gallico») described the Germans, their way of life and their language. About a century later, Pliny the Elder wrote about the Teutons in his great work «Natural History». He gave the classification of German tribes: East Germanic (the Vindili), North Germanic (the Hilleviones), West Germanic (the Ingveones the Istevavones and the Herminones).
Grimm’s Law
The specific peculiarities of consonants are the most remarkable distinctive feature of the Germanic linguistic group. The scholars, who compared Germanic languages with NonGermanic languages of Indo-European group discovered that they are shifted.
Grimm’s Law states the correspondences between
consonants in Germanic languages and consonants in NonGermanic languages of the Indo-European system of the languages.
Grimm’s Law falls into three acts or categories:
1. The 1st category states that Indo-European Non-Germanic voiceless plosives [p, t, k] correspond to Germanic voiceless fricatives [f, Ɵ, h].
