10. About what chores are they talking?
Put the dishes in the sink. I’d better turn it inside out first or it may go shiny. I can’t really put them outside, it looks like rain. Can you get me a trolley? I think I’ll need that big saucepan. The bag is full, that’s why it isn’t picking up all the dirt. You’ve left finger-marks on the outside and the inside. You’ve missed part of the mantelpiece; I’ll move the ornaments. You can see your face in this table now! I usually change the sheets and pillow cases on Wednesdays.
11. Match the words and the chores.
Words - verbs: mop, rinse, dry up, stir, sweep, wipe, scrub, beat, scorch, soak, wring, fold, drain, scour, chop, press; Nouns: sponge, broom, brush, bucket, ironing board, cloth, detergent, dustpan, chopping board, bowl, tea towel.
Chores: cleaning the floor, washing up, washing a sweater, ironing a blouse, making dinner.
12. Answer the questions:
1) Are you good at cleaning the house? What are your favourite household duties? Why?
2) What household chores do you consider to be drudgery? Why?
3) What would you recommend a person who hates housework?
4) What do you think of people who don’t mind the mess in their house? They say that houses are made for people, not people for houses.
5) What work about the house is done every day, every week, once in a season?
51
6) Who do you call Tired Tim?
7) What do you do if you want to air the room?
8) What do you do if you want to dust the furniture?
13. Describe a thorough turnout in detail. How often is a thorough turnout done? What do you have to do if you want to do a thorough turnout? Did you participate in such general cleaning?

Somebody had thrown peanut shells all over the stairs. d) He swept the strewn litter into a heap, then dropped it into a box. e) She was disastrously lazy. She would lie about the house, reading magazines and spilling ash on the floor, while the dirt piled up in the corners and the milk went sour in the musty larder. f) He came into the room: the bed had not been tidied up for a week, odds and ends of clothing decorated improbable places. But if he felt better there would be a general cleaning. g) That evening he carefully cleared up the kitchen and the medicine cabinet and closets and bookcases. Then he had a big house-cleaning and aired everything out in the sun. h) The apartment was in its familiar state of disorder, with the bed unmade and Eric’s clothes draped over chairs. i) Ten minutes later equipped with dusting cloths, pail, mop and broom Joseph was attacking two weeks’ accumulation of dirt.

Reading and speaking
Before reading the dialogue try to answer the following questions: ● Do you agree that domestic chores can be divided into “men’s” and “women’s” duties? Speak about existing stereotypes. ● Do you like receiving guests at your place? What do you do to prepare your dwelling to this occasion? Discuss these issues
with your fellow-students. Share your personal experience.
► Read and translate the dialogue.
A DOMESTIC DISAGREEMENT Ella: How come this carpet’s covered in crumbs? Have you been eating those
biscuits again?
Paul: Yeah. They’re nice. Ella: Well, you know where the “Hoover” is. Paul: I thought it was your turn. Ella: No, Paul, we agreed about today’s chores. We said I’d do the shopping
and you’d do the washing up, the dusting and the hoovering. And what about the bathroom? You said you’d clean it about three days ago. We’ve got people coming round for dinner tonight. Do you really want them using our bathroom the way it looks at the moment? Paul: They won’t notice. I haven’t changed that light bulb yet, so it’s quite dark in there.
53
Ella: It’s not funny, Paul. It’s not fair to be lazy like this. Especially when I’ve just been shopping for an hour and a half. You know what the supermarket’s like on Saturday – the queues are awful. And I had to wait twenty minutes for the bus back. Twenty minutes! I’m exhausted, and you’ve just been sitting here watching TV.
Paul: That’s not true. I’ve made the bed. Ella: Big deal. Paul: Hey, don’t start saying I don’t do my share around the flat, OK? Who does all the DIY? Who put those shelves up last weekend? Ella: You did. All I’m saying is that we’ll have guests here in about three hours
and this flat’s a pigsty. So we need to get a move on. I can’t start cooking until you’ve done the washing up – all the pans I need are dirty.
Paul: All right, all right. Just let me finish my tea, ok? There’s no rush. Ella: That’s easy for you to say. You haven’t got a three-course meal to make. Paul: Well, cooking’s easier than cleaning. Ella: How do you know? When was the last time you cooked for guests? Paul: Er … Ella: Exactly. Now come on, let’s make a start. If you run out of washing-up
liquid there’s a new bottle in my shopping bag.
