ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ
Практикум содержит адаптированные тексты, упражнения и задания, ко-
торые подготовят обучающихся к профессиональному и межличностному об-
щению на английском языке в смешанном экипаже в объеме функциональных
обязанностей на борту судна.
Практикум включает 4 учебных модуля. В модуле 1 «Getting acquainted.
How to introduce yourself» представлены стандартные речевые клише, необхо-
димые для прохождения устного собеседования при приеме на работу и для за-
полнения анкеты в письменной форме, а также полезные фразы, необходимые
для собеседования в телефонном режиме. Содержание заданий в модуле 2 «In
the engine room» связано с такими темами, как «Устройство машинного отделе-
ния», «Основные помещения службы технической эксплуатации», «Функцио-
нальные обязанности практиканта-механика на борту судна», и направлены на
отработку лексического и грамматического материала в речевых ситуациях.
Модуль 3 «General ship’s certificates and international maritime conventions» знакомит с основными морскими международными конвенциями, правилами
и предписанными обязанностями, которые нужно соблюдать при несении вахты в машинном отделении. Модуль 4 «Safety onboard» представляет учебный
материал по безопасности жизнедеятельности на судне и в море, направленный
на формирование и совершенствование коммуникативных навыков на иностранном языке.
Учебный материал настоящего практикума направлен на формирование
у обучающихся способности к англоязычной коммуникации в ситуациях бытового и профессионального взаимодействия в море.

INTRODUCE YOURSELF
In a crewing company. How to make the right impression
with answers at a job interview
1. Speaking activity.
It is very hard for seamen nowadays to find a job. Interview is the first step to
get a job. Don’t lose your chance, you might not get another chance. Treat your first
interview as the first very important step in seeking a job. Tyr to do your best to produce a good impression on an interviewer.
Soon you will have your first shipboard training. You are a trainee cadet and
searching job vacancies in the crewing company. Your first job interview and your
first meeting with a crewing manager will be tomorrow. What are you going to start
your preparation for job interview with? (cadets’ opinion)
Your look says a lot about you. In what way do you understand this expression? (use the following phrases: to wear formal clean dress, have hair trimmed, look
neat, don’t wear casual dress)
What would you wear for your first job interview? (use the following
phrases: to wear trousers, tie, formal shirt, suit coat). How do you understand “to
look friendly at job interview”? (use the following phrases: to keep smiling when
speaking, to be confident)
2. Reading activity.
Mind some helpful rules for your first job interview:
1. Don’t be late. Come at the time appointed for an interview.
2. Wear formal dress, have hair trimmed, look neat.
3. Be confident, don’t be afraid or nervous.
4. Be friendly, but don’t treat an interviewer like a friend. Show your respect.
Speaking with a man use “sir”, with a woman “ma’am”.
5. When you come in, greet an interviewer, introduce yourself and only after-
ward take your seat.

When answering questions posed to you, try to answer with conviction, don’t
keep long pauses between his/her question and your answer.
6. Answering question use the following opening phrases. These phrases help
to make your speech more vivid and impressive:

to my mind
if I am not mistaken
I am not quite sure
I am afraid
I dare say
I suppose
in my opinion
let me think
it seems to me

7. Always try to maintain eye contact.
So, what are rules of behavior of an applicant at job interview?
If you know some sayings, jokes or proverbs relevant for the situation, don’t be
shy to use them. They help to ease the tension.
Remember, it’ very hard nowadays to find a job. Interview is the first step to
get a job. Don’t lose your chance, you might not get another chance. Treat your first
interview as the first very important step in seeking a job.
3. Self-assessment exercises.
1. Choose the correct answer.
“Show your respect to an interviewer” means:
1) be tactful and fair;
2) be late for the first interview.

“Be confident at a job interview” means:
1) be active;
2) be vacant.
“Formal dress” means:
1) have hair trimmed, be neat;
2) jeans, T-shirt.
“Look friendly at a job interview” means:
1) keep smiling at face-to-face interview;
2) not ready for conversation.
2. Point out statements which correspond with this key sentence. Prove your
opinion.
The job interview is considered to be very important for apprentices.

2. If your interview is not successful, you might get another chance.
3. It is very easy for seafarers nowadays to find a job.
3. Try to catch the meaning of the following proverbs without dictionary.

The following scheme (layout) will help you.
1. Full name (last name = surname = family name; first = given name = fore
name; middle = second name).

5. Citizenship (of what country are you a citizen).
6. Address for correspondence (building, street, city, state).
7. Telephone (including city code).

12. Children.
13. Education (educational background): what was the last high school you at-
tended, when were you graduated from it; have you attended a college or university:
date of entering, date of leaving, qualification, course completed: shore-based simulator training course / complete course of training).

are trying to have job interview with an agent. Make up the dialogue using the questionnaire and helpful phrases (сначала преподаватель задает вопросы, потом кур-
санты друг другу).

38. Do you know man overboard signal? (general alarm; fire alarm; on
scrambling with water; abandon ship signal; at protection against a weapon of mass
destruction)?(common ship alert (general alarm): continuous bell of loud chipping during 25–30 seconds; on scrambling with a fire (fire alarm): continuous
blast on the ship’s whistle for a period of at least 10 seconds supplemented by continuous ringing of the general alarm bells for a period of 25–30 seconds; on scram-
