Telephone talk
The crewing companies require adequate knowledge of the English language
which enables the engineers and motormen to use engineering publications, to perform assigned duties properly and to communicate with each other in a mixed crew.
You will be asked questions which assess your knowledge concerning your educational background, your sea-going experience, basic principles to be observed in
keeping the engineering watch. You must demonstrate how you can put your
thoughts into words correctly. Of course, you will be asked the following question:
How is your English? The following helpful phrases will jog your memory while answering all questions posed to you.

MODULE 2. IN THE ENGINE-ROOM
1. A little story “WHY IS A SHIP CALLED SHE?”. Listen to the story at-
tentively and tell with whom the ship is compared? And why?
WHY IS A SHIP CALLED SHE?
A ship is called she because there is always a great deal of bustle around her;
there is usually a gang of men; she has a waist and stays; it takes a lot of paint to keep
her good looking; it is not the initial expense that breaks you, it is the upkeep; she can
be all decked out; it takes an experienced man to handle her correctly; and without
a man at the helm, she is absolutely uncontrollable. She shows her topsides, hides her
bottom and when coming into port, always heads for the buoys.

7. An Explanation of the Principal Characteristics of a Ship.
The length overall is the total length measured from the foremost to the after-
most points of a ship’s hull.
The breadth, moulded is the distance between the outer faces of the widest
frame of a ship.
The draft / draught is the depth of a vessel below the waterline, measured
vertically to the lowest part of the hull, the bottom of the keel, propellers or other
points of reference.
The displacement is the weight of the water displaced by a vessel, equal to the
weight of the vessel.
The service speed of a vessel is given in knots. The term “knots” means veloc-
ity in nautical miles per hour either of a vessel or a current.
Shaft / brake horsepower is the means to express the power of turbines or
diesel engines.
Effective horsepower is the actual power available for propulsion which is
equivalent to the indicated shaft horsepower, that is power actually developed in the
cylinders of an engine less all losses due to friction of machinery, line shafting, etc.

2. Between what faces is the moulded breadth measured?
3. What can the points of reference for measuring the ship’s draft be?
4. Can you define the ship’s displacement?
5. What does the term “knot” mean?
6. What units is the engine power output expressed in?

1. What does the propulsion system of a diesel-driven ship include?
2. What are supporting systems of the diesel engine?
3. What two types of propeller are used for driving the ship through the water?
4. What does the power plant of a turbine-driven ship consist of?
5. What are the main parts of a boiler?
6. What are most transport ships propelled by?
11. Marine engineer’s routine day.
The ship’s personnel who have joined the vessel must operate it in accordance
with the established standards. Any crew member, who violates the regulations, is
unqualified for this assignment, or fails to meet the minimum standards will be dismissed from the ship (signed off).
The day at sea is usually divided into watches of four hours. Nowadays the
most often used system of ship’s organization is the four-and-eight system, that is
four hours — on watch and eight hours — off watch.
Let’s discuss the working day in the engine department.
1. What is the working day of the engine department divided into? (into watch-
es of four hours)
