Family rate is reserved for families with children. Usu-
ally the rate includes extra bed charges and may also include some free add-on activities for children.
Package rate provides a customer with a guest room combined with other available events or activities. For example, Best of London package includes room rental, meals, sightseeing, airport transfers, etc. Package rate can also offer a simple room and meal package like American Plan (AP), Modied American Plan (MAP), Continental Plan (CP), etc.
Best available rates (BAR) are the lowest discounted rates available for a day which can be offered to a guest by the Reservation or Front desk staff.
Room rates may also vary according to the room size, location, view, furnishings, decor, etc.
The hotel room rates also vary according to the season.
Peak Season. This is a period when demand for a hotel and its services is the highest and the hotel can charge guests the highest prices. There is no dened peak period for every hotel; it varies from hotel to hotel.
Valley Season / Off Season. This is the time of the year with the lowest demand for rooms. Hotels generally offer reduced rates and packages eg: ‘Stay for 3 and pay for 2 nights’, ‘Discounted package rates’ etc.
Shoulder Season. This period falls between peak season and off season. Shoulder season is considered the best time to attract new business as the rooms are available and medium or the highest rates can be charged. Sales and marketing activities should also be intensied during this period.

25. Case study.
Developing packages with complimentary tourism partners in your area or with value added components is a good way to stimulate demand without having to discount. Packaging can also be used to target niche markets effectively e.g golf weekend, food and wine tours, pampering packages etc.
Strike up a deal with local businesses to provide a full package and share business with each other – you should be able to get their products or services at a “net” rate so the package pricing is better than if they had purchased each component separately.
