Look at the photograph of C. Pissarro. What kind of a person do you think he was according to this photo? What are your personal impressions about this great artist?
LANDSCAPE IN CAMILLE PISSARO’S WORKS
Everything is beautiful,
all that matters is to be able to interpret.”
C. Pissarro
Monet’s friend and fellow artist Camille
Pissarro (1830-1903) offered a new image of
the landscape in a style similar to Monet’s. He
painted scenes where the urban meets the rural.
Some of his paintings portray the rural landscape alone. However, many show urban visitors to the countryside or small towns or factories. He was born in the Dutch West Indies into French parents and raised near
Paris. Pissarro studied art in Paris during the 1850s and early 1860s. In 1870, while he and Monet lived in London, Pissarro embraced the ideas that would later become known as Impressionism. The two artists worked together in England, trying to capture what Pissarro described as plein air light and fugitive effects. The impact on both painters was a lightening of color intensity and hue, and a loosening of brushstroke.

LANDSCAPE NEAR LOUVECIENNES BY C. PISSARO
Pissarro moved to the town of Louveciennes in late 1868 or early
1869. It was a time when his friends Renoir and Monet were working in nearby Bougival. These two peaceful villages on the Seine have since come to be jointly known as the cradle of Impressionism.

Pissarro had a somewhat more traditional view of landscape painting than other Impressionists. He retained a more conventional spatial and geometric structure in his compositions. Under the influence of Monet, however, his style gradually relaxed and became freer. The present painting is a particularly good example of this transition. It is in fact one of the most "Impressionistic" works the artist ever created. Pissarro placed the road in the foreground parallel to the painting's edge. He broke up the surface with trees and a pattern of foliage. Thus, he denied himself the usual spatial reference points. The vegetable gardens along the side of the road have become daubs of color. The brushwork throughout is relatively unrestrained.
The artist chose as his site a small village path fronted with modest rural homes. The few figures in the painting are local residents. In spite of their rather summary depiction, they could not be mistaken for the Parisians who frequently flocked to Louveciennes for a pleasant weekend. Pissarro lived in a house just a short walk down this same path. Not far away was the Seine and the swimming place near La Grenouillere, the restaurant made famous by Renoir and Monet. Pissarro was more of a pure landscapist than either of these artists and was inclined to avoid crowds. He also used a more restricted palette than his companions. The artist concentrated on variations of green and brown to render what he saw. Unlike other Impressionists, who experimented with color and tended to purify it whenever they could, Pissarro's colors reveal his more "realistic" outlook. In addition to being one of Pissarro's more adventurous canvases, Landscape near Louveciennes is one of the largest he ever executed [7].
