How Effective Is Peer Interaction in Facilitating Learning? A Meta-Analysis
Individuals of different ages often learn through interaction with peers. In children, peer interaction can facilitate cognitive development (...) In this article, we present a meta-analysis of the effectiveness of peer interaction
33
across a variety of areas of learning to explore moderators of the effectiveness to inform theory and practice.
Peer interaction is typically conceptualized as stemming from constructivist theories of learning, such as the radical constructivism of Jean Piaget, and the social constructivism of Lev Vygotsky. Both theories and the subsequent research inspired by them place peer interaction at the heart of many developmental processes. In both, the notion of intersubjectivity, that is, shared meaning between interactional partners, is key to explaining possible learning benefits from peer interaction...For Piaget, the child is an active participant in constructing knowledge. According to Piaget’s approach, adult– child interaction is less effective in promoting learning because the adult’s natural authority leads to asymmetry that renders the child a more passive recipient of knowledge and instruction. With peers, in contrast, children are better able to question others as free and active participants in social discourse, argument, and learning (...). It is this active engagement from all interlocutors that leads to gains in learning. Studies across a range of areas of learning, from both Piagetian (...) and from Vygotskian (...) frames have demonstrated benefits for peer interaction over and above individual or independent learning. In line with Piaget’s theory, research into peer interaction and social learning has sought to demonstrate the benefits of conversation between peers on developmental processes.
Similarly, Vygotsky (1978) emphasized the role of intersubjectivity in development. Subsequent approaches, developed out of Vygotsky’s theories, have focused on development as a process imbued with social and cultural context. While the sociocultural context remains vital to conceptualize learning and development, Vygotsky proposed a zone of proximal development (..) where interactions between children (inter- psychological) are appropriated into cognitive and metacognitive processes (intrapsychological). Thus, children learn from peers with relative expertise through sharing of knowledge and a mutual understanding that is generated in social interaction.
A key difference between Vygotsky’s (1978) and Piaget’s (1932) approaches lies in the role of adults and peers in interaction. Piaget emphasized the ways in which adult– child interaction could present potential obstacles to engagement in learning. For instance, in adult– child interactions, adults may dominate and children may comply more readily with adults’ than other children’s instruction. Vygotsky was more positive in arguing that adults could stimulate individual children’s learning. Indeed, some studies from a Vygotskian perspective suggest that individual children learn more from interaction with adults than peers (..). This meta-analysis makes it possible to evaluate these contrasting positions through particular
34
moderators, such as whether children need to build consensus in groups and to whom peer interaction is compared (i.e., individual vs. child–adult comparisons).
Classwide reciprocal peer tutoring has also been found to effective (..) in increasing children’s learning. One program that incorporates classwide tutoring is Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS), which in- volves reciprocal whole-class peer tutoring. In PALS, two pupils with different levels of achievement work together while the roles of tutor and tutee are alternated (..). Children are taught to work in pairs and additionally receive targeted subject lessons from teachers, such as summarizing para- graphs and making predictions (..). PALS programs have been found to produce positive learning outcomes, particularly with younger children, and lowincome and ethnic minority urban children (..).
One concern is that such programs require significant time and resource investment from teachers, and differ from the more common naturally occurring interaction that takes place in everyday learning contexts. In typical classrooms, children spontaneously engage in interaction while completing learning tasks, and teachers often directly encourage children to engage in conversation. It is the effectiveness of these conversations that take place between untrained peers that forms the focus of our analysis.

French Law Forbids Food Waste by Supermarkets
France has become the first country in the world to ban supermarkets from throwing away or destroying unsold food, forcing them instead to donate it to charities and food banks.
Under a law passed by the French senate, large shops will no longer bin good quality food approaching its best-before date. Charities will be able to give out millions more free meals each year to people struggling to afford to eat.
Supermarkets will also be barred from deliberately spoiling food in order to stop it being eaten by people foraging in stores’ bins. In recent years, growing numbers of families, students, unemployed and homeless people in France have been foraging in supermarket bins at night to feed themselves. People have been finding edible products thrown out just as their best-before dates approached.
Some supermarkets doused binned food in bleach, reportedly to prevent food poisoning from items taken from bins. Other supermarkets deliberately binned food in locked warehouses for collection by refuse trucks.
Crucially the law will also make it simpler for the food industry to give some excess products directly to food banks from factories. Until now, if a dairy factory made yoghurts carrying the brand name of a supermarket, it had been a long, complex process to donate any excess to charity. Now it would be faster and easier.
Each year 1.3bn tonnes of food are wasted worldwide.

The article is called French law forbids food waste by supermarkets. The article covers the topical issue of food wastes. At the beginning of the text the author mentions that the French senate passed a law banning supermarkets to throw away unsold food and forcing them to donate it to charities. The article stresses that people struggling to afford to eat will get millions of free meals. The author gives the examples of how supermarkets were trying to get rid of the products before that law. Strikingly, some of

Deep Fakes: A Looming Challenge for Privacy, Democracy, and
National Security. Distortion of Democratic Discourse
Public discourse on questions of policy currently suffers from the
circulation of false information. Sometimes lies are intended to undermine the credibility of participants in such debates, and sometimes lies erode the factual foundation that ought to inform policy discourse. Even without prevalent deep fakes, information pathologies abound. But deep fakes will exacerbate matters by raising the stakes for the “fake news” phenomenon in dramatic fashion (quite literally).
Many actors will have sufficient interest to exploit the capacity of deep
fakes to skew information and thus manipulate beliefs. State actors sometimes have such interests. Other actors will do it as a form of unfair competition in the battle of ideas. And others will do it simply as a tactic of intellectual vandalism and fraud. The combined effects may be significant, including but not limited to the disruption of elections. But elections are vulnerable to deep fakes in a separate and distinctive way as well, as we will explore in the next section.
Democratic discourse is most functional when debates build from a
foundation of shared facts and truths supported by empirical evidence. In the absence of an agreed upon reality, efforts to solve national and global problems become enmeshed in needless first-order questions like whether climate change is real. The large-scale erosion of public faith in data and statistics has led us to a point where the simple introduction of empirical evidence can alienate those who have come to view statistics as elitist. Deep fakes will allow individuals to live in their own subjective realities, where beliefs can be supported by manufactured “facts.” When basic empirical insights provoke heated contestation, democratic discourse has difficulty proceeding. In a marketplace of ideas flooded with deep-fake videos and audio, truthful facts will have difficulty emerging from the scrum.
In addition to the ability of deep fakes to inject visual and audio
falsehoods into policy debates, a deeply convincing variation of a longstanding problem in politics, deep fakes can enable a particularly disturbing form of sabotage: distribution of a damaging, but false, video or audio about a political candidate. The potential to sway the outcome of an election is real, particularly if the attacker is able to time the distribution such that there will be enough window for the fake to circulate but not enough window for
