The twentieth century
April 1917: USA entered the First World War (1914–1918) and
helped the Allies to win

attackforcedtheUSAtodeclarewar.
1920s: a period of prosperity
TheUSA wasveryrichasmanyEuropeancountries owed it alotof
money.Itsfactorieswereproducingmoreandmoregoods(especially
automobiles and “consumer goods”: refrigerators, vacuum cleaners,
stoves,radios,etc.). ManyAmericansboughtalotofthings,wentto
movies,boughtsharesandplayed the market.Gangstersalsobecame
richastheyillegallysoldalcoholdrinks,whichwereprohibitedin1919.
1929: Crash. The beginning of the Great Depression
The great Depression is an economic crisis. It started because the
valueoftheshareshaddramaticallyfallen.Manypeoplewhoplayed
themarketlosttheir money;manylosttheir jobs.By193226 % of
Americanswereunemployed.FranklinRooseveltintroducedhisplan
ofgettingoutoftheDepressionandbecamePresident.Hismainidea
(“NewDeal”)wastogivepeoplework.
1941: Japan attacked American eet at Pearl Harbor. The USA entered the Second World War. By the end of the war the USA became the strongest country on earth
ThewarhelpedtoimproveeconomicsituationinAmerica.Itbecame
the main supplier of weapons and unemployment disappeared. The
USAcreatedtherstatomicbomb,whichhelpedtoforceJapansurrender(bombingofHiroshimaandNagasaki)andgaveitahugepower.ThesecondstrongestcountrywasUSSR.
The competition between the USA and USSR (the “Cold War”) started. It took place in economics, world’s politics, science and ideology.
“IronCurtain”separatedcommunism-ruledcountriesfromcountries
ofthewest. BothUSAandUSSRtried toshowtheworld thattheir

wayoflifeandlifein“their”countrieswasbetter.Tryingtondmore
supporters, the USA offered after-war countries free help (Marshal
Plan).In1949theUSSR alsohadanatomicbomb.USAandUSSR
becomesuspiciousofone another.The governmentwaslookingfor
communistsamongAmericans(McCarthywitchhunt).
USA helped foreign countries to ght against communism and
USSR helped its supporters from the same countries to ght
against capitalism
TheexamplesofthisoppositionarethewarsinKoreaandVietnam.
ThemostdangerousstageoftheColdWarwasCubanCrisis.Finally
N.KhrushchevandJ.Kennedymanagedtondacompromise.Ifnot,
theThirdWorldWarcouldhavehappened.
1952: Americans made the hydrogen bomb. In 1953 Russians
made it too
1961: The USSR was the rst to send a man into space.
1969: Americans were the rst who came to the Moon (the Space Race)
1960s-1970s: social disturbances took place in America. People
were against American ght in Vietnam. African Americans and
American women were ghting for their equality. Hispanic Americans became more politically active.
