The twentieth century
April 1917: USA entered the First World War (1914–1918) and helped the Allies to win
AtrsttheUSAwantedtostayaway and thoughtthatthewarwas apurelyEuropeanaffair.Butbothsides(theAlliesandGermany/Austria/Hungary)interferedwithAmericanshipping.Germansubmarine attackforcedtheUSAtodeclarewar.
1920s: a period of prosperity
TheUSA wasveryrichasmanyEuropeancountries owed it alotof money.Itsfactorieswereproducingmoreandmoregoods(especially automobiles and “consumer goods”: refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, stoves,radios,etc.). ManyAmericansboughtalotofthings,wentto movies,boughtsharesandplayed the market.Gangstersalsobecame richastheyillegallysoldalcoholdrinks,whichwereprohibitedin1919.
1929: Crash. The beginning of the Great Depression
 The great Depression is an economic crisis. It started because the valueoftheshareshaddramaticallyfallen.Manypeoplewhoplayed themarketlosttheir money;manylosttheir jobs.By193226 % of Americanswereunemployed.FranklinRooseveltintroducedhisplan ofgettingoutoftheDepressionandbecamePresident.Hismainidea (“NewDeal”)wastogivepeoplework.
1941: Japan attacked American eet at Pearl Harbor. The USA entered the Second World War. By the end of the war the USA became the strongest country on earth
ThewarhelpedtoimproveeconomicsituationinAmerica.Itbecame the main supplier of weapons and unemployment disappeared. The USAcreatedtherstatomicbomb,whichhelpedtoforceJapansurrender(bombingofHiroshimaandNagasaki)andgaveitahugepower.ThesecondstrongestcountrywasUSSR.
The competition between the USA and USSR (the “Cold War”) started. It took place in economics, world’s politics, science and ideology.
“IronCurtain”separatedcommunism-ruledcountriesfromcountries ofthewest. BothUSAandUSSRtried toshowtheworld thattheir

wayoflifeandlifein“their”countrieswasbetter.Tryingtondmore supporters, the USA offered after-war countries free help (Marshal Plan).In1949theUSSR alsohadanatomicbomb.USAandUSSR becomesuspiciousofone another.The governmentwaslookingfor communistsamongAmericans(McCarthywitchhunt).
USA helped foreign countries to ght against communism and USSR helped its supporters from the same countries to ght against capitalism
TheexamplesofthisoppositionarethewarsinKoreaandVietnam. ThemostdangerousstageoftheColdWarwasCubanCrisis.Finally N.KhrushchevandJ.Kennedymanagedtondacompromise.Ifnot, theThirdWorldWarcouldhavehappened.
1952: Americans made the hydrogen bomb. In 1953 Russians made it too
1961: The USSR was the rst to send a man into space.
1969: Americans were the rst who came to the Moon (the Space Race)
1960s-1970s: social disturbances took place in America. People were against American ght in Vietnam. African Americans and American women were ghting for their equality. Hispanic Americans became more politically active.
