INTRODUCTION
This is a collection of specialized texts for English language
classroom. The book’s approach to language learning integrates reading,
writing and speaking activities by organizing them around scientific and
engineering themes. Teaching subjects through English provides a better
preparation for professional life and there are clear motivational
advantages in teaching English for a well-defined purpose which is
perceived as relevant by the students. The objective of the edition is to
stimulate foreign languages learning motivation.The book gives practice
in reading, speaking and using vocabulary. Each activity focuses on a
particular subject area and shows how it could be applied to teach an
aspect of that subject. There are the answers to the tasks at the end of the
book. The units are classroom ready materials and can be used with
individuals, pairs, small groups or large classes.
The exercises in this book may be photocopied and handed out to the
class, projected as a transparency, or even read aloud. In addition to class
time use, they can be assigned as homework exercise or extra credit
problems. Teachers are encouraged to pick up the ideas and adapt them
to suit their own specific circumstances.

READING: Interdisciplinary Science

Write at least 3 examples for each word if possible.
An interdisciplinary approach involves drawing appropriately from
several disciplines (or separate branches of learning or fields of
expertise) to redefine problems outside of normal boundaries and reach
solutions based on a new understanding of complex situations. The term
interdiscipline or cross-discipline means an organisational unit that
involves two or more academic disciplines. It is related to
interdisciplinarity, but it is a noun used for a certain kind of unit
(academic discipline). A field may be both a discipline and an
interdiscipline at the same time. The example of information science
demonstrates that a field may be regarded as a discipline in some
countries but an interdiscipline in other countries.
Interdisciplinary programs sometimes arise from the viewpoint that
the traditional disciplines are unable to address an important problem.
For example, social science disciplines such as anthropology and
sociology paid little attention to the social effects of technology
throughout most of the 20th century. As a result, many social scientists
with interests in technology have joined science and technology studies
programs, which are typically staffed by scholars drawn from numerous
disciplines. They may also arise from new research developments, such
as nanotechnology, which cannot be addressed without combining the
approaches of two or more disciplines. Examples include quantum
information processing, an amalgamation of quantum physics and
computer science, and bioinformatics, combining molecular biology
with computer science.

A Smart Man Unique Pathway
The Physics and Mathematics School, now it is the Specialized
Educational Scientific Center of Novosibirsk State University (SESC
NSU), was founded by the academician Mikhail A. Lavrentiev. He was
an outstanding scientist; an organizer and teacher who wanted to give
gifted senior school students an opportunity to study in Akademgorodok
and make a scientific career. It is one of the four specialized educational
scientific centers in Russia, where gifted senior school students, who are
enthusiastic about natural sciences, study.
Since its foundation in 1963 the School has given a great number of
students and researchers to Novosibirsk State University (NSU) and the
Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). Generally, 95 % of graduates enter
the top country universities, 60 % of them go to NSU. There are a lot of
Grand PhD in sciences among graduates of SESC; every 4th SESC
graduate becomes the PhD. First of all, the SESC is immersion in the
unusual atmosphere and the unique environment which is filled with
various researches, experiments, new achievements and adventures.
Professors, Grand PhD in Sciences, Associate Professors, and PhDs
among SESC Teachers share their knowledge with 500 talented pupils
every year. A great variety of optional courses is offered on physics,
chemistry, biology, informatics, history, literature, foreign languages and
other subjects.
The SESC NSU specializes in two profiles: physics-mathematics and
chemistry-biology. It is possible to begin studying at SESC after the 8th,
9th and 10th comprehensive school classes. A high school training
system is designed to attend lectures as well as focus on laboratory skills.
It allows students to study sciences and humanities effectively.
A new SESC-student looking for education opportunities has a range
to select from: participation in the International scientific student’s
conference of NSU; prize-winning places in the All-Siberian and AllRussian Olympiads, participation in tournaments on chemistry, physics,
mathematics and other subjects; an opportunity for out-of-competition
enrollment in the top higher education institutions of Russia; independent
scientific projects and research.

The Physics and Mathematics School is a boarding school which
occupies four buildings: a study building, two welcoming dormitories
and a canteen. Three neighbors bent on studying and five meals a day
create a positive physical and emotional atmosphere. In the Summer
School the pupils will get some experience of living in the dormitory and
having meals at the canteen. On the one hand, they become more
independent from their parents, but on the other hand they need to be
more responsible and take care of themselves. At the same time life and
study here encourages good teamwork and communication. The class
teachers are ready to help students if they have any difficulties, and they
are always in touch with their parents.
The cost of residential contents can be reduced if the participant of
Summer school in case of enrollment in the SESC has gained certain
points on any two of the 4 subjects (mathematics, physics, chemistry,
biology). If the pupil has successfully acted at the preliminary, first or
final stage of the All-Siberian or a final and regional stage of the All-
Russian Olympiad: has become the winner, has become the prize-winner,
has taken the second place or the 3rd place, the payment can also be
reduced.
There is the Distant (Correspondence) School attached to the
Specialized Educational Scientific Center. The main purpose of the
School is to help pupils of the 5th to 11th forms develop independent
thinking, to teach them to work with books and state their thoughts
properly. During a year students of the Distant School have to fulfill
several tasks prepared by the professors of Novosibirsk State University
and the Specialized Educational Scientific Center. Annually more than
1000 pupils from many regions study at the Distant School and the best
of them are admitted to the Summer School. The Correspondence school
allows you to specialize in mathematics (5–11 classes), physics (7–11
classes), chemistry (9–11 classes), biology (10–11 classes), and offers
one-year courses on Russian and foreign languages. If somebody wants
to participate in the Summer School, they can also receive the SESC
NSU Correspondence School invitation according to their course results.
Using the distant learning system the schoolchildren will broaden their
knowledge and do well in final exams. You will benefit from the
Correspondence School courses’ access all year round.
The SESC NSU Summer School is annually opened on the 1st of
August. The winners and prize-winners of the Olympiads on

mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology or information technology,
regional and final stage of the All-Russian Olympiad, school section of
the YSSC, final stage of the All-Siberian Olympiad; free admission
applicants; and graduates of the SESC Correspondence School are
invited. To participate in the All-Siberian Olympiad, register on the
website or in the SESC NSU. The summer course is based on a series of
weekly lectures followed by smaller seminars and workshops. Sport
activities, highly creative events, excursions and field trips are integral
components of the Summer School life. The assessment tasks include
some written tests and an interview. The best applicants are accepted into
the Specialized Educational Scientific Center.
The SESC school year starts at the very beginning of September: the
initiation ceremony, semester assessments, scholarships, and, of course,
a dormitory. Students have lectures and seminars on physics,
mathematics, chemistry, and biology delivered by teachers of the SESC
and scientists of research institutes. At lessons schoolchildren are taught
in a non-standard way to improve their motivation and make study
interesting. Students have classes on compulsory subjects in the school
curriculum from 8.30 to 14.10 every day except on Sundays. During a
semester student’s achievement is assessed with a mark every month. By
the end of each half-year students take exams on the main subjects. To do
well in exams students have to attend lectures and seminars, do their
homework regularly, and be hardworking and persistent. But study is not
everything for young people. Visiting the most interesting research
laboratories, meeting the best Russia’s and world’s scientists and experts,
Novosibirsk State University and Novosibirsk Scientific Center resources
are available to each SESC student.
After lessons students are involved in a diverse programme of arts and
sports activities: to keep fit and healthy they have a lot of physical
activities; they play ball games, run and ski. They enjoy going to the
theatre with their classmates, visit museums and exhibitions, having
celebrations of important events of the school life, reading and discussing
books. Project work, contests of quick-witted, concerts, and discos help
teenagers relax and enjoy themselves. The friends they make here are
often the lifelong friends. Your independent life in a boarding school will
begin under attentive facilitators’ supervision.

There are some scholarship programmes and funds in the SESC for
the most capable students, successful researchers and Olympiad
movement activists.
Students who passed the finals successfully have a good chance of
entering one of the best Russia’s universities – Novosibirsk State
University. For many school leavers life and study at the Physics and
Mathematics school is an unforgettable experience.
About 16 thousand students have graduated from the school
throughout its 60-year history. SESC graduates dedicate themselves to
scientific work and are active in various fields of social life. But the main
thing is to provide its own Sure Start Programme.

Today physics ranks among the most important sciences studied at
school.
Physics operates with extremely simplified representations of natural
phenomena, abstract from minor details. As a school subject physics uses
characteristics of bodies and their interaction introducing the minimum
of necessary qualities. So, in mechanics, it is sufficient to present a body
as a material point possessing only one physically significant-quality –
the mass.
It is known, that the fewer limitations are, the more generality
conclusions possess. Due to the exclusive simplicity and generality of
limitations accepted in physics, its conclusions have become basic for the
visual environment. They are called the fundamental laws of physics.
Physics is the scientific basis of modern engineering and technology
development.
Nowadays physics sets an example of scientific thinking and is an
essential part of education. At physics and mathematics school the
obligatory courses contain fundamental knowledge on physics.
Lectures and seminars are delivered by teachers of the SESC and
scientists of research institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian
Academy of Sciences (www.sbras.ru).
In a lecture course students have an opportunity to go through details
of physical phenomena, to get illustrations of their generality and force.
In seminars, students are given necessary terminology – the language
of physical statements. It creates a communication level of dialogue at
studying physics. On the other hand, seminars are aimed at mastering
students’ skills to create a model of the phenomenon and construct an
algorithm of a problem solution.
Concepts taught in lectures are better understood when lectures are
accompanied by demonstration, hand-on experiments, and questions
that require students to consider what will happen in an experiment and

why. Students who participate in active learning are able to learn through
self-discovery. By trial and error, they learn to change their
preconceptions about phenomena in physics and discover the
underlying concepts.
Besides the obligatory courses, students can select an optional course
on physics to explore in-depth specialist fields. They can gain a thorough
grounding in many sections of physics, including quantum mechanics,
semiconductor physics, colloid physics, etc.
