I. EMERGENCY SITUATIONS AT SEA
No seafarer wants to get hurt or suffer from injuries while working on ships. We all know it’s a hostile working environment at sea and accidents sometimes happen as a result of one main and common reason human error. A lot of regulations ensure the safety and security of the seafarers working on ships. However, there are few types of life threatening accidents which take place on board ships around the world.
Man overboard.
Man overboard situation is a common and one of the most dangerous situations. The person falls into water while working or as a result of some accident. Though seafarers are trained to deal with such situations, bad weather and heavy sea can spoil the rescue operation. Areas with extremely low water temperature can also cause hypothermia or even death. Several people lost their lives in past because of such accidents.
Enclosed Space Accidents.
This is one of the most common types of accidents on board ships.
Such accidents occur mainly when the ship’s crew enters an enclosed
space which is not properly gas-freed. Seafarers must be extremely cautious while entering enclosed spaces.
Electrical Shock Accidents.
Electrical shocks also took several lives on board ships. Unattended electrical connections, exposed wires, and failure in taking basic precautions while handling electrical equipment lead to many unfortunate incidents.
Machinery Explosion.
Improperly maintained machinery sometimes leads to blasts or
explosions, destroying the ship’s parts and killing people working around.
Accidents such as compressor and boiler blasts have caused serious injuries and even death.
Falling from Height.
On board ships, seafarers are often required to work at heights. They must wear safety harnesses and use other important safety tools. However, in spite of taking all the necessary precautions, several crew members lost their
7
lives or suffered permanent injuries as a result of falling/slipping from heights, failure of safety devices or falling inside cargo hold during inspection.
Piracy Attacks.
Though this is not a real kind of accident on board ships, it is a situation which is extremely life threatening. Pirates use lethal weapons while trying to hijack the vessel. There were accidents where pirates boarded the vessel, killed crew members and occupied the vessel.
Lifeboat Testing Accidents.
It is said that lifeboats take more lives than they save. Lifeboat testing during drills is an important routine on board ships. However, several seafarers have lost their lives while performing such tests. Though new regulations have been introduced in order to ensure safety while handling lifeboats, accidents involving severe injuries and deaths still occur as a result of lifeboats testing.
Hot Work Accidents.
Accidents as a result of hot work can occur because of several reasons. One of the most common ones are when hot work is carried out in enclosed space with flammable gases or when the adjacent tank has flammable material.
Among other emergency situations at sea the following are the most dangerous ones:
Collision vessel coming into a destructive contact with another vessel or object.
Stranding the condition when a vessel has run on a strand or a beach.
Grounding the condition when a vessel touches the sea bottom.
Foundering (flooding) vessel in danger of sinking due to taking
water into compartment.
Listing when the vessel has a considerable list to port or to starboard.
Capsizing over-keel situation.
Oil Spill emergency on oil tankers due to some human error or
damage to the ship or faulty equipment operation.
