IX. MEDICAL ASSISTANCE ON BOARD
First aid is given to relieve pain, prevent death or counteract shock.
Immediate assistance is required in case of:
- severe bleeding;
- stopped breathing or heartbeat;
- unconsciousness.
First aid must be rendered to stop or control bleeding, remove
poisons, restore breathing and heartbeat.
Artificial respiration and heart compression should be started if
there is no pulse. The pulse is taken on the casualty’s wrist or carotid
artery. There are three methods of artificial respiration:
- mouth-to mouth;
- mouth-to-nose;
- Silvester method.
Shock treatment is necessary when the patient’s skin is pale, cold
and moist, his breathing is shallow and raid, pulse is weak, he is suffering
from nausea and vomiting. In this case the following treatment should be
administered:
- eliminate the cause of the shock;
- lay the casualty down;
- keep the casualty warm (not hot);
- relieve pain (use painkiller);
Unconsciousness. The three musts for the unconscious patients are:
- clear airway;
- do not move the casualty;
- do not leave the patient alone.
Bleeding. In case of severe bleeding the following actions should
be taken:
- lay the casualty down;
- control or stop bleeding by pressing the source with your had or
fist if nothing else is available (use a clean handkerchief or a piece
of cloth);

62
- if an arm or a leg is wounded and bleeding, lift it up as vertically
as it is possible;
- apply a tight bandage on the source of bleeding to maintain
the pressure;
- keep the injured part as still as possible;
- if bleeding doesn’t stop, apply another bandage and use
a tourniquet;
- do not move the patient if injuries to the spine or neck are
suspected. In this case immediate Radio Advise should be obtained.
Never underestimate:
- unconsciousness;
- suspected internal bleeding;
- stab or puncture wounds;
- possible fractures;
- eye injuries.
Death. Never consider anyone dead until you are sure that;
- there is no pulse;
- breathing has stopped;
- the eyes are sunken;
- the body is cooling.
