Negotiation is a dialogue between two or more people or parties intended to reach a mutually beneficial outcome, resolve points of difference, to get advantage for an individual or collective, or to make outcomes to satisfy different interests. Building a team is critical to negotiations in business. Negotiation teams should spend a lot of time preparing for upcoming talks. An important part in the negotiation process is played by emotions. You should keep your overconfidence within limits.

Writing a Killer Press Release

1___ Brainstorm four or five titles for an important press release, and then come back to them the next morning. See which one seems the most interesting to you.

2___ Do not exaggerate when you write. Instead, make sure you deal with the facts. Journalists get dozens of press releases a day, and words like “revolutionary” and “ground-breaking” get old very quickly, especially when these words are describing very ordinary events.

51

3___ A badly-written press release won’t get read. Get help if you need it: there are a number of good, professional PR agencies out there if you’re not able to write perfect copy in English, for example.

4___ Present your news as a story. The focus doesn’t have to be on your company. What you want is something that people will want to read about. So focus on the people who use your products and services, and that will make your story come to life.

5___ Ideally, give the press release to someone who doesn’t know anything about the topic, and have them look at it for fifteen seconds. When they give it back to you, can they tell you the most important points? If not, you need to revise what you’ve written.

A.Keep things real.

B.See the story from the reporter’s point of view.

C.Create a headline that will grab your readers’ attention.

D.Proofread carefully. E. Keep it short.

F.Designing a new product.

Good presentation requires good preparation. First of all, it’s necessary to identify the audience you will be presenting to and their specific expectations. This will help you define both the content and the level of your presentation. As a presenter you should be clear about the exact purpose of your presentation. Any material in your presentation must be relevant. It’s better to collect too much material than not enough. Your talk or presentation is to be clearly structured. When you start your presentation, the audience will immediately form an impression of you. I will be based on your appearance and manner. If you feel comfortable and confident, this will be transmitted to your audience. The instrument which can help you captivate the audience is your voice. In general, try to avoid extremes of pitch and volume. Preparation plus practice perfects presentation.

Tips on giving effective presentations:

1. It is not necessary to prepare your presentation well.

52

2.The audience you will be presenting to and their specific expectations are not important to the presenter.

3.Any material in your presentation must be relevant.

4.Your appearance and manner have some significance.

5.It is better to collect less material than too much.

6.Make sure you know the objective.

7.You do not need any plan for your presentation. It shouldn’t be clearly structured.

8.Your voice tone should be firm and confident without any extremes of pitch and volume.

Nowadaysthe Internet is one of our main sourcesof information, but because of the freedom of the Internet, anybody can put up information on a website. Just because the information is on the Internet does not mean that it’s true. So we need to be critical about what we read and find on the Internet.

Brainstorming: Principles

1___ People in the group can call out any ideas, but during the brain storming session people shouldn’t make either positive or negative comments. This is because these comments can stop other people from suggesting new ideas.

55

2___ In a brain storming session, you want lots of ideas. Usually people say all the most usual, least imaginative things at the start, but, later more original, innovative ideas come out. These are the ideas you want. So if you get lots of ideas, it’s more likely that there will be interesting ideas.

3___ Everybody is allowed to take somebody else’s idea and adapt it or change it. This is all part of group creativity.

4___Theideascanseemtobemad,humorous,stupidorunimportant. Who knows? Maybe when you think more about it there’s something brilliant inside that mad idea!

A. All ideas are welcome, even crazy ones.

B.No criticism in ideas is allowed.

C.Life situations.

D.Quantity helps to get quality.

E.It’s OK to borrow other people’s ideas.

F.Designing a new product.

The Pomodoro technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Chirillo in the late 1980s. The technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Each interval is known as a pomodoro, from the Italian word for ‘tomato’, after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that Chirillo used as a university student.

Arguments “for” the effectiveness of this technique:

1.The Pomodoro technique can’t help in planning your time.

2.It is very difficult to use this time management technique.

3.The Pomodoro technique is designed to help people work effectively and avoid wasting time.

4.It helps you to get the maximum productivity in the time you

have.

56

5.You waste your time using this technique.

6.The Pomodoro technique is a system to help you manage your

time.

7.This time management technique can be used for studying and working.

8.It is impossible to complete the task if you use this technique.

Case studies. Problem Solving

When you’re young you might think you have all the time in the world, then all of a sudden you have to start making important choices. ‘What activities do I want to do?’ ‘Which clubs should I join?’ ‘Which subjects should I pick in school?’ Then you have to decide about further education, work experience and careers.

The trouble is that the choices we make along the way right back to the clubswejoininprimaryschool —canaffectthe futureswechoosefor ourselves.Whileourfuturecanalwaysbealteredandisourowntochoose, the journey can be made much easier by planning for the future you want today. What is the best way to plan your future to reap more benefits?

Task 1

Read, translate and express your opinion about the following statements:

1. “You can be realistic or dream big. No one can follow your plan but yourself, but try not to fill your plate too much because that is the easiest way to fall off your plan.”

2.“It is a mistake to try to look too far ahead. The chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time.” (Winston S. Churchill)

3.“We do not get to choose how we start out in life. We do not get to choose the day we are born or the family we are born into, what we are named at birth, what country we are born in, and we do not get

58

to choose our ancestry. All these things are predetermined by a higher power. By the time you are old enough to start making decisions for yourself, a lot of things in your life are already in place. It’s important, therefore, that you focus on the future, the only thing that you can change.” (Idowu Koyenikan)

4.“When you do the things in the present that you can see, you are shaping the future that you are yet to see.” (Idowu Koyenikan)

5.“The future is never just one choice. It’s a thousand. And they never stop. You will choose your future every day of your life. And should you wake up one day to find that you regret the choice you made the day before, then make a new one. Don’t worry about whether you might be wrong someday. Worry about whether you’re right now. Tomorrow can wait.” (Cora Carmack)

Task 2

Think about your past experiences and the things in your life you’re most proud of. Make a list of your greatest accomplishments in life. How did those accomplishments make you feel? Can the things that have been most fulfilling for you influence on your future plans?

Task 3

Think about the people you respect and admire most. Who are they? What do they do? What are their best qualities? Why do you respect them? What can you learn from them? Do you agree that following the path of successful people can set you up for success?

Task 4

Think about your plans for the future and complete the Table below. Try to cover the following areas:

Training and development

Further work placement and experience goals
