Scientific ethos is a concept that characterizes the social norms and constitutive rules of science. The concept of the ethos of science has given rise to a series of critical discussions. The scientific ethos debate is viewed as part of the more general controversy between structuralfunctional analysis and a phenomenological-interpretative approach.

I.What is scientific ethos for you? Which position is closer to you and why? Give arguments proving your viewpoint.

−There is an argument that the principles of scientific behavior are not moral norms. Presently there exists a number of different sets of norms and standards for scientific practice (e.g. a research methodology describes the techniques and procedures for conducting research in a certain field of knowledge). From this point of view, scientific ethos is a normative structure of scientific practice.

−The second point of view emphasizes that the rules regulating scientific activity are not normative. It is more a complex of values, social and psychological norms, which rules each scientist unconsciously (norms of ethics, feeling of trust, credibility, authority, authorship, expertise, persuasion).

−Ethos of science is connected with a political approach regarding it as an ideology. Ethos is described as the guiding beliefs or ideals that characterize a scientific community and determine actual conduct of scientists in various organizational and historical contexts. Ethos as an ideology is the spirit that motivates ideas and research practices (projects, grants, financing, public and private stakeholder funding).

−Informing the society about the results of the research works is a part of a scientist’s profession.

III.What words and expressions are characterizing your ethos as a researcher? Make 7–10 sentences describing your research ethos. Explain your position.

Curiosity, competition, cooperation, responsibility, scientist’s autonomy, to deliver useful solutions, the search for truth and knowledge, to gain recognition in the scientific community, to remain humble, to attract the interest of people outside the scientific community, to be independent, knowledge is a product on the market, to conduct original research, to popularize the results of the research, to build an image of yourself as a scientist, entrepreneurship, to follow the values and norms that bind all scientists, to care about the good of humanity, to support the rule of objectivity in science, to use methods helping to find the objective truth, to achieve practical results, intellectual property rights.

Education is a step by step process of gaining knowledge and set of skills. The knowledge and skills can be acquired through studying books, practical experience or through instruction. Education has multiple benefits and positive effect on a person’s life. But there is one trouble with graduates, people who’ve left university. They have no work experience. So, should education necessarily teach people for a particular job or is it enough to teach people how to think?
