UNITE I
JOB HUNTING
LEAD-IN Have you ever searched a job?
Look at the list of the common ways to find a job. What ways are the best? Why? Put the following methods of job hunting in order of effectiveness.
□Job portals, mobile applications
□Newspaper, radio and TV advertisements
□Job fairs
□Friends, relatives and colleagues (referral)
□Vocational Training Centers
□Volunteer, summer and trainee jobs
□A private or public recruiter or an employment agency
□A company's web site for open jobs, typically in its applicant tracking system
□Networking websites
□Visiting an organization to find out whether it is recruiting staff or will be doing so in the near future.
□Invitation by organisations
Discuss your choices with your partner.
READING Don’t miss the chance to enrich your vocabulary: jobseeker – соискатель
to hire – нанимать
to apply – подавать заявление, обращаться to be in a rush – торопиться
recruiter – вербовщик employer – работодатель employee – работник
to distribute – распространять target – цель
referral – рекомендация acquaintance[әˈkweɪntәns] – знакомства to reach out to – обратиться к
people with a say – люди с правом голоса
1. Read the text bellow. Compare your own opinion with the expert’s tips.
The best ways to find a job
If you are a job seeker, your checklist for finding a new job goes something like this:
5
1.Update/create a resume
2.Apply for jobs online
(5)When you are not in a rush, time-consuming uploading your resume to sites like Indeed.com may pay off over the long. At least now your resume is in a database for future searching by recruiters and hiring managers.
The three approaches below can shorten the length of your job search.
1.Resume Distribution Services
(10)Remember: your goal is to get your resume in front of as many employers or recruiters as possible so you should do some “homework.”
Most resume distribution services submit your resume to recruiters and/or employers who may have registered with them to receive resumes. Before investing, find out exactly how their distribution lists were amassed, what their fee covers and what sort of guarantees are offered.
(16)A quick online search reveals many resume distribution services out there – and like everything they range from low quality to more expensive but targeted. When evaluating this option, keep in mind that the quality of the list and the ability to target specific job functions and industries makes a difference.
2.Target Companies
(21)Building a list of companies to target can be useful if you have specific job search parameters (local/relocate, stay/leave industry, and so on).
To build your list of targeted companies, consider sites of professional associations, company websites, business magazines and local Chambers of Commerce.
(26)The next step is to start connecting with employees, recruiters and HR professionals to introduce yourself and get conversations started. It’s important to meet as many people with a say in the hiring process.
3.Examine Your Network
(30) The old saying “You never know who you know” is actual as ever. It definitely applies to job searching. Everyone knows someone who knows someone so tell everyone that you are hunting a job. When performed thoughtfully, smart networking often leads to job leads, referrals, advice and support.
Consider reaching out to everybody whom you’ve known:
family
friends
your existing network
graduates from your alma mater
former employers + colleagues
neighbors
acquaintances
(35)Whether your kids play sports together, if you go to the same gym or know each other in passing at the dog park, you never know what information they might be willing to pass along unless you try. When reconnecting,
6
remember that networking is a two-way street and you need to be prepared to return the favor.
A Multifaceted Approach
(40) While your resume and LinkedIn profile should always be updated and current in terms of formatting, timing is everything. Your connections must be in the right time and place. Maximize your network and your efforts by engaging in a combination or variety of all of the above as part of your job search.
2.Read the text above once more and rewrite it. To get hired …
you can ______________________________________________. you should____________________________________________. you mustn't___________________________________________. you have to___________________________________________. you may_____________________________________________.
3. Find in the text the synonyms to the words below. The number in brackets refers to the line in the text. Make up your own sentences with the words in the table above.

2.Transform these job interview tips using Modal Verbs (p. 56-60).

Don't complain about prior jobs you've held. 8. Don't complain about your former employers. 9. Be polite, respectful and positive. 10. Learn everything about the company. 11. Prepare your questions. 12. Don't ask something you could have found on your own. 13. Don't wait until the last minute. 14. Write thank-you note for interviewers. 15. Don't hound a hiring manager.
JOB INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
Strengths and Weaknesses
3. One of the most common questions of job interview: "What are your strengths and weaknesses?". Distribute personal qualities from the box below in two columns of the table. Some of qualities can be both positive and negative. Discuss your choices with the partner.
Too detail-oriented, not skilled at delegating tasks, creative, honest, skilled at planning, well-organized, competitive, quick learner, lack of some skills, communication skills, self motivated, focused, attentive, collaborative, too critical of myself, empathetic, naturally shy, success oriented, too helpful, leader, not detail-oriented, team player, hardworking, procrastinator, intelligent, self confident, introvert, not comfortable taking risks, innovative, flexible, patient, sensitive,. disorganized, disciplined, entrepreneurial, positive

Weaknesses |
Some tips for your own answers
In the event that you are asked about strengths and weaknesses at the same time, discuss your weakness first so that you can end on a positive note.
8
Use the job description as your guide as you select your strengths. Follow the same formula of strength + context and story. When providing context for your strengths, address the specific qualities that qualify you for the job and distinguish you as a candidate
Don’t list multiple, vague strengths. Stay focused on one or two key qualities that relate directly to the role and support them with specific, relevant examples.
Don’t be arrogant, inflate your strengths or lie about your abilities.
However, don’t be too humble or underestimate yourself.
4. Read these samples of answers. Which of them are about weaknesses? Which of them are about strengths? Consider your own weaknesses and strengths, write down your answer. Some tips above will help you.
a) “I’ve always been a procrastinator. I used to think it wasn’t such a bad habit because I was only creating stress for myself. But when I was working for XYZ Company several years ago, I was on a group project where I could see how my putting things off to the last minute created stress for everyone else. I started creating daily schedules that hold me accountable to my team, and I broke the habit. It was hard at first, but using the Agile process was a real breakthrough in my workflow and mindset.”
b)“I can be too critical of myself. A pattern I’ve noticed throughout my career is that I often feel I could have done more, even if objectively, I’ve done well. Earlier in my career, this led to burnout and negative self-talk. One solution I’ve implemented over the last three years is to actively pause and celebrate my achievements. Not only has this helped my own self-esteem, it’s helped me genuinely appreciate and recognize my team and other support systems.”
c) “I’ve always been a natural leader. With over ten years of experience in finance and sales, I’ve exceeded my KPIs every quarter and have been promoted twice in the past five years. I look back at those successes and know that I wouldn’t have reached them if I hadn’t built and led teams composed of highly skilled and diverse individuals. I’m proud of my ability to get crossfunctional groups on the same page. I’ve regularly honed my management skills through 360 reviews and candid sessions with my team, and I know continuing to build my leadership skills is something I want from my next role.”
5. Being prepared for job interview will help you feel more confident. Review this list of engineer interview questions and practice your response.
1.Tell me about the most challenging engineering project that you have been involved with during the past year.
2.Describe the most challenging written technical report or presentation that you've had to complete.
3.Describe an experience with a difficult client. How did you handle the situation? What would you have done differently?
9
4.Tell me about your greatest success in using logic to solve an engineering problem
5.Give me an example of a time when you applied your ability to use analytical techniques to define problems or design solutions.
6.Do you have any patents? If so, tell me about them. If not, is that something you see yourself pursuing in the future? Why or why not?
7.What engineering skills have you developed or improved upon during the past year?
8.Which software packages are you familiar with? What is the most interesting thing you know how to do with one of these packages?
