2. Write your own resume.
COVER LETTER
Keep it to one page in length. The reader wants a cover letter that is to the point and easy to read. Get the reader's attention straight away. You can do this with the appearance and layout of your letter. It should be in a clear and easily readable font, well laid out, and if you are mailing your letter use good quality stationery.
Do not use To Whom It May Concern. Cover letters are most effective when addressed to an individual. Personalize the greeting by getting the name of the reader. Call the company and get the full name and correct spelling of the recipient. Addressing the letter to someone by their name grabs their interest.
State your objective in the first paragraph to keep the reader's interest. Why are your writing this letter? What is the benefit of reading this letter for the recipient? Build an immediate connection to the reader.
The second paragraph is the right place to highlight your specific skills and abilities and how they meet the requirements of the job opportunity. Summarize why you are the right person for the job.
Relating your strengths to the needs of the company and the job immediately indicates that you have spent time thinking about the position. Keep it short and to the point so that you don't lose the reader's interest.
Your closing should also be concise. Make a strong closing statement and motivate the reader to take action.
11
Let the reader know what you want - an interview, an opportunity to call. Explain when, where and how you can be contacted. You can proactively tell the reader that you will follow up at a certain point in time. Thank the reader.
Read the text above once more and rewrite it.

BUSINESS CORRESPONDENCE
LEAD-IN
How often do you deal with business correspondence?
Why don't we write the way we speak when we compose a business letter?
What rules of the English business correspondence do you know? READING
The structure of business letter
The oldest representative of business correspondence is a business letter. It is considered to be written on paper and sent in an envelope.
The fully blocked layout is now the most widely used method of display for all business documents because it simply means that everything starts at the left. Paragraphs aren't indented, headings aren't centered. You can type your letters quicker.
There are many different types of business letters but most of them have the same traditional structure:
1. The Heading/Letter Head (sender's address in the top right corner) 2.The Reference lines
3.The Dateline (the date)
4.The Inside Address (the receiving address)
5.Attention Line
6.The Salutation
7.The Subject line
8.The Body Text
9.The Complimentary closing
10.The Signature
11.The sender's typed name 12.The sender's title
13.The Enclosure

1. Look at the sample of the business letter below, fill the table, match its parts with the elements of business letter structure (1-b).

The Date in the English business correspondence
There are two traditional ways to write the date in your letter. In Britain: 1) the day, 2) the month, 3) the year.
In the USA:1) the month, 2) the day, 3) the year.
This means that 02.07.99 is the second of July in Britain, but in the United States it is the seventh of February! So in the business letters we always write the month in letters then everybody will know what you mean. Remember to use a capital letter for a month.
Sometimes we use the abbreviations of the month (February -Feb), but June, July, March and May are always written as a whole word.
3. How would you write these dates in a letter?
03.12.05; 15.11.92; 06.10.01; 01.09.00; 25.03.91; 04.07.03; 24.06.03; 11.09.01
The Complimentary closing
4. Read the text below and fill the table with the appropriate complimentary closing. To know more about the Salutations you can at p. 72-73 (Appendix #1).

Yours faithfully is British usage. It is used when the recipient is not addressed by name, as in a letter with a “Dear Sir” salutation.
Yours truly is the American equivalent of “Yours faithfully” . It is advised by American business teachers. When an American begins a letter “Dear Sir,” he/she closes it with “Yours truly.” Commonly appearing in the US as "Yours truly," or "Yours very truly," in the UK was an indication that the recipient was of a higher status than the signatory.
15
Yours sincerely is also British. Americans tend to reverse the order and write Sincerely yours.
Now Sincerely is a common and acceptable close for American business letters. In England they say that to write Sincerely without the Yours is not enough.
"Cordially" or "Best regards" are commonly used in the USA. "Best regards" has become more and more common, and it may soon eclipse "Sincerely" in popularity. "Regards" is the minimalist version and it seems curt rather than friendly.
In Britain such closing as "Cordially" or "Best regards" are always inappropriate for business letters to strangers, and their use may be considered silly and uninformed by the recipient.
