.pdfSMART OIL FIELDS
If an oil company discovers a large single reservoir of oil and gas, the solution is simple: drill a vertical well down to the reservoir and bring up the oil. But what can be done when an oilfield consists of hundreds or even thousands of small, isolated pockets of oil? It would be too expensive to drill hundreds of vertical wells to reach all the small pockets.
The innovative solution to this problem is the ‘snake well’. Unlike the conventional vertical well, this is a horizontal well that weaves laterally back and forth across a number of oil-containing zones. Guided by
smart technology, a single snake well can access multiple pockets of oil and achieve output equivalent to several individual wells, which has the dual advantage of reducing cost and ensuring that no oil is overlooked.
A snake well uses steerable drills that can be positioned with great accuracy. Special imaging software generates detailed computer models of underground geology and reservoirs. This enables drills to hit a target far underground that is less than two metres across.
Located 90 km off the coast of Brunei, the Champion West oilfield is Shell’s flagship project using Smart Fields technology. For 30 years, Champion West lay dormant, its rich oil reserves locked 2,000 to 4,000 m beneath the seabed in a complex web of small reservoirs.
In the past, these small pockets of oil were too expensive to develop. But now Champion West has been changed into one of the world’s most advanced oil and gas fields by means of Smart Fields technology and new drilling techniques.
Buried deep beneath Champion West’s seabed, sensors relay digital information about temperature, pressure and other factors to control centres on land by means of a network of fibre-optic cables.
This enables continuous monitoring of production, and engineers can make speedy decisions on how best to extract the maximum amount of oil, monitor its movement within the reservoir and instantly notice production problems, such as blockages. They can take action to solve problems, for example by the remote electronic activation of hydraulic well valves. If gas or water threatens to break into the well, for example, the valve for that section can be closed down using a remote control.
Swellable seals are used to isolate the zones from one another, and prevent fluid from one zone from flowing into another adjacent zone.

Crude oil Formation
Today’s reserves of hydrocarbons (oil and gas) derive from ancient (1) organic materials like dead leaves and trees that settled on the bottom of seas and lakes. Heat and pressure combined to transform the organic matter first into kerogen, found in oil shales throughout the world, and in due course into (2) and gaseous hydrocarbons.
Reservoirs
Oil reservoirs form only in certain (3) … conditions: the hydrocarbon materials must be buried so deep that pressure and heat combine to cook it; the rock system must be (4) … so that it acts as a reservoir; finally, as oil and gas tend to rise, there must be a cap of (5) … rock to prevent the crude oil and gas escaping to the surface.
Extraction
In a (6) … well, underground pressure is (7) …to force the crude oil to the surface. In time, the pressure fades, and pumps are required to raise the oil to the surface. When this method fails, water is pumped into the underground reservoir to force out the oil. In wells that are becoming depleted, more (8) … methods may have to be used, such as forcing steam down into the reservoir.
Oil shales versus oil sands
Oil shales are relatively hard rocks, called ‘marls’, that have not beenexposed to enough heat and pressure to transform them into crude oil.
The kerogen trapped in these marls is (9) … , however, and can be transformed into crude oil by heat and pressure. Oil sands, on the other hand, are deposits of crude oil that have undergone a (10) … degradation. The resulting deposits form a heavy, (11) … form of crude oil, known as oil sands.

GRAMMAR
THE PARTICIPLE
THE PARTICIPLES
English verbs have two participles: the present participle (typing, writing) and the past participle (typed, written).
Participles have some qualities of verbs and are used in the formation of the continuous, perfect and perfect continuous tenses (he is typing; he has written a letter).
Participles have some qualities of adjectives and are used as attributes in a sentence (a smiling girl; surprised faces).
Participles are also used in the function of adverbial modifiers (he opened the door, smiling; surprised, he didn't know what to say).
A participle construction, that is, a participle together with the words closely connected with it, can function as an
54
attribute (the student sitting at the table) or as an adverbial modifier (standing by the window, she watched the people).
Participle constructions (participial constructions) are usually called "participial phrases" or "participial clauses".
English participles are translated into Russian with the help of verbs, adjectives, participles, adverbial participles. Russian adverbial participle has no corresponding form
in English.
Formation of Participles Present Participle
The present participle is formed by adding "ing" to the base form of the verb: flying, playing, running, sleeping, working.
The present participle expresses active meaning: doing, flying, playing, reading.
Past Participle
Regular verbs form the past participle by adding "ed" to the base form of the verb: moved, played, stopped, typed.
Irregular verbs form the past participle mostly by changing the root of the word: broken, flown, read, sold, taken, written.
The past participle expresses passive meaning: done, moved, played.
The Present Participle
The present participle (of the main verb) is used in the formation of the
55
continuous and perfect continuous tenses.
Continuous tenses: He is working now. She will be writing letters at four o'clock.
Perfect continuous tenses: He has been working since early morning. By six o'clock, she will have been writing letters for three hours.
Past Participle
The past participle (of the main verb) is used in the formation of the perfect tenses in the active voice and of all of the tenses in the passive voice. Examples:
Perfect tenses: She had typed two reports by ten o'clock yesterday. She will have typed the next report by six o'clock.
Tenses in the passive: Five reports were typed last week. Two reports had been typed by ten o'clock yesterday. This report will be typed tomorrow.
Forms of Participles
Participles have simple and compound forms. Simple forms consist of only one word, i.e., the participle itself: doing, done. The form "doing" is simple active; the form "done" is simple passive.
Compound (analytical) forms are formed with the help of the auxiliary verbs "be" and "have": having done; being done; having been done.
The form "having done" is perfect active; the form "being done" is pas-
ных глаголов "be" и "have": having done; being done; having been done. Форма "having done" (сделавший) –
перфектная активная; форма "being

sive; the form "having been done" is perfect passive.
Examples of simple and compound forms
The student is reading a book.
The reading student didn't pay any attention to the teacher's words.
The student reading a book didn't pay any attention to the teacher's words.
He was sitting by the window, reading a book.
Having read ten pages of the book, he decided to have a break.
The books read by him last week included several novels.
Published in 1900, the story was adapted into a film in 1939.
Having been translated into several languages, this story is well known in many countries.
Translation of Participles
Depending on the function in the sentence, on the context and meaning, English participles are translated into Russian as participles, as adjectives, as adverbial participles, as verbs. Compare these examples:
I saw a running boy.
He was running very fast. He ran shouting something.
done" (делаемый) – пассивная; форма
"having been done" (уже сделанный) –
57
Running past the bakery, the boy stopped abruptly.
He stood there, looking at the shopwindow intently.
Having found the door locked, the boy left.
Adverbial Participles
In the examples above, "shouting something; running past the bakery; looking at the shop window; having found" have been translated into Russian with the help of adverbial participles.
There are no adverbial participles in English. We translate English participles into Russian with the help of suitable adverbial participles in those cases where it is required by the norms of the Russian language.
Participle after noun
Participles are often placed after the nouns that they modify: the problems remaining; the people involved; the questions discussed
In such cases, you can use a participle construction instead of a single participle. A participle construction expresses the same meaning as a relative subordinate clause (attributive clause)
The questions discussed were quite important. – The questions discussed at the meeting were quite important. – The questions that were discussed at the meeting were quite important.
Пробегая мимо булочной, мальчик внезапно остановился.
Он стоял там, пристально глядя на витрину. Он стоял там и пристально смотрел на витрину.
Найдя дверь запертой, мальчик ушёл.
Деепричастия
Впримерах выше, "shouting something; running past the bakery; looking at the shop window; having found" пе-

Participle construction after noun
Participle constructions in the function of attributes stand after the nouns that they modify. For example:
I talked to several people participating in the project.
Active and passive meanings of Participles
In the function of attributes, present participles express active meaning, and past participles express passive meaning.
In a number of cases there are no corresponding Russian participles with active and passive meaning, for example, in the case of "boring, bored". Compare these sentences:
His attitude is annoying. She looks annoyed.
Some past participles in the function of attributes can express active meaning. For example: advanced students; experienced users; developed countries; increased activity.
Participles as adverbial modifiers
Participles in the function of adverbial modifiers (of time, reason, manner, accompanying circumstances, etc.) are usually found in participle constructions, though single participles are also quite possible. The negative
59
particle "not" is placed before the participle. Participle constructions in the function of adverbial modifiers are used mostly in writing.
Having finished my work, I went home. (After I finished my work, I went home.)
Not knowing what to expect, she was afraid to open the door.
Surprised by his strange decision, his friends tried to talk him out of it.
Prepositions and conjunctions in the form of participles
Some prepositions and conjunctions are in the form of participles. For example: concerning, considering, including, notwithstanding, owing to, judging from, provided that, regarding, supposing.
Owing to the rain, the game was postponed. Considering the price, this table is a good buy.
Absolute Participle Construction
The absolute participle construction has its own subject and can stand at the beginning or at the end of the sentence.
Nobody knowing what to do, we decided to do nothing.
Sydney is the largest city in Australia, with Melbourne being the second largest.
Our work finished, we said good-bye and left.
частица "not" ставится перед причастием. Причастные обороты в функции обстоятельств употребляются в основном в письменной речи.
Закончив работу, я пошёл домой. (После того, как я закончил работу, я пошёл домой.)
Не зная, чего ожидать, она боялась открыть дверь.
Удивлённые его странным решением, его друзья пытались отговорить его от этого.
Предлоги и союзы в форме причастий
Некоторые предлоги и союзы имеют форму причастий. Например: concerning, considering, including, notwithstanding, owing to, judging from, provided that, regarding, supposing.
Из-за дождя игра была отложена. Принимая во внимание цену, этот стол – удачная покупка.
Самостоятельный причастный оборот
Самостоятельный причастный оборот имеет своё собственное подлежащее и может стоять в начале или в конце предложения.
Так как никто не знал, что делать, мы решили ничего не делать.
Сидней – самый большой город в Австралии, а Мельбурн – второй по величине.
Так как наша работа была закончена, мы попрощались и ушли.
