Text IV
It happened once that a trolley bus, a car and a bicycle met at the red light. As they were waiting for the green light, they began to argue.
The car was the first to speak. He said to the bicycle, "I can't understand why people are using you! You are so slow. Do you know the people started travelling by cars about a hundred years ago: in 1885. I'm very fast, I can carry not one man, as you do, but five. Anybody can see that I'm more useful than you."
"It depends on when and where," said the small bicycle.
31
Then the trolley-bus spoke, "I'm better and more useful than you." He said to the car, "You can take only five people, but I can take more. It's quite clear to anyone that I'm more useful than you."
"It depends on when and where," said the bicycle again. At that moment they saw a green light and moved on to
see which of them was the fastest. Of course the bicycle was the slowest and the trolley-bus couldn't leave the city. The car left the city and was moving very fast. But soon he came to the place where there was a bridge over the river. The car couldn't cross it as the bridge was under repair. So, he had to take another road. And when, at last, he came to a village on the other side of the river, he saw that the bicycle was waiting for him. "Why!" said the car. "How did you cross the river?"
"Well", said the bicycle, "there was a little passage on the bridge just wide enough for me to cross the river. And so, here I am. Do you remember what I said? It depends on when and where. You see now that I was right."
Answer the questions:
1.When did the people start using cars?
2.Why did the car think the bicycle wasn't useful?
3.Why did the trolley-bus think he was more useful for passengers than the car?
4.Why couldn't the car cross the river?
5.Who was waiting for the car when it came to the other side of the river?
6.Was the bicycle right when he said: "It depends on when and where"?

The 14th of April is known as one of the most tragic in the history of the United States.

In the evening of that day President Abraham Lincoln went to the Ford's Theatre in Washington to see a performance which was very popular at that time. He never returned.
The day had started for the President with the usual office duties. The people of the City of Washington were happy: a few days before the war between the North and South had ended. There were a lot of flags in the streets on private and government buildings. The visit to the theatre that night had been planned by Mrs. Lincoln. The President enjoyed going to the theatre and went there very often. However that evening he didn't want to go there. He had felt very tired all day. But it had been written in the newspapers that the President would arrive at the theatre that evening.
The President was at the theatre at about 9 o'clock. The play had already begun. When he appeared in the box the public greeted him. The play was interesting and the President enjoyed it. He didn't know his life was in danger.
At about 10 o'clock John Boon, an actor, came into the theatre and walked to Lincoln's box. He opened the door, came into the box and fired into the President's head. All this happened so quickly that no one could say a word. The people thought it was all part of the play. But soon they heard a woman's voice: "The President has been killed." It was Mrs. Lincoln. A doctor from the audience ran up to the President box. After he had examined him he said that Mr. Lincoln had only a few hours to live.
During the night many important officials of the Government came to the Tenth Street where the President stayed until his death the next morning. The members of his family came. Government doctors and specialists were invited but there was nothing that anyone could do. At about seven o'clock in the morning the President died. One of the people in the room at that time said: "Now he belongs to ages." These words have since become famous.
