Pick a challenge

Charity challenges are a great way to stay fit and healthy, and also help other people. Here are five of the best challenges you can do.

1. Chatsworth 10 km walk

Every October you can raise money for Cancer Research UK by walking 10 km around the gardens of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. It isn’t very difficult and it doesn’t matter who wins! Do the walk with your family and friends and raise money for a great charity. Cancer Research also organises lots of other walks around the country.

2. Rainforest Foundation 10 km

If you live in London, and want to help in the fight against the destruction of the rainforests, then this is the run for you. It takes place every November in Finsbury Park in London and the money you raise helps local communities in the rainforests of the world. There’s also 1 km run so your children can take part too.

3. Climb Kilimanjaro

Have you ever wanted to climb a mountain? Then this is the challenge for you. Lots of charities organise expeditions to climb Africa’s highest mountain so you can choose who you want to support. The NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) is doing one at the end of February next year – but you should really get fit for this – you climb 5, 895 metres and walk about 50 miles.

4. Bath Half Marathon

If you support the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institute), then make your way to Bath in March each year. The city hosts one of the UK’s most popular half marathons. At just over 13 miles, it’s easier than a full marathon, and it takes place in one of the UK’s most beautiful cities. It’s a hilly city, but the marathon course avoids the hills and follows the river Avon instead.

5. Three Peaks Challenge

Breast Cancer Campaign is organising this challenge next summer, but the exact date hasn’t been fixed yet. The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the UK’s three highest mountains in just 24 hours – Snowdon in Wales, Scafell Pike in the Lake District and Ben Nevis in Scotland. It’s a difficult challenge, but lots of people complete it every year.

London’s Trafalgar Square has three large statues as well as Nelson’s Column, but it also has an empty place where a fourth statue should be: the fourth plinth. Since 1998, this fourth plinth has been used for various temporary works of art. In July 2009 the sculptor Antony Gormley set up his One & Other project there. This involved 2,400 different people standing on the fourth plinth for 60 minutes each – a total of 100 days. 35,000 people applied, and the lucky ‘plinthers’, as they became known, were picked at random.

The ‘plinthers’ could do anything they wanted in their 60 minutes, and there were some very mad moments. For instance, at 5am on the second day a man got onto the plinth dressed as a cow and performed six dances. Another man, who was dressed in a 1940s suit, stayed completely silent for his 60 minutes. One woman, who bravely stood on the plinth on roller skates gave a talk about the history of roller skating.

Lots of people decided to use their 60 minutes to make a point and many charities decided to use the plinth to tell people about their charity. Trafalgar Square has been a site for protests for generations, so it was an appropriate place for a lot of issues to be brought to the public’s attention.

Art is often considered to be rather elite, so this project gave everybody the chance to be involved in a work of art – it was about bringing art to the public in a great way. Some critics called Gormley's project dull, but how many works of art have given 2,400 ordinary people the chance to become art itself?
