Pandas disturbed by earthquake

Last month there was a large earthquake in the Sichuan area in China. The earthquake upset the pandas at the famous Wolong reserve, which was right at the centre of the earthquake and is badly damaged.

Eight of the young animals have now arrived at Beijing zoo, and the zoo keepers there are giving them lots of attention to help them recover. Conservationists hope their arrival at the zoo will make people more aware of the damage to their habitat and encourage people to give donations to the reserve. It could take 10 or 20 years for the reserve to recover. The earthquake destroyed many buildings and large areas of bamboo, and a new road is now unusable. The earthquake also killed four staff members and left a fifth person seriously ill in hospital.

The keepers at the reserve were really worried when they saw the pandas after the earthquake. They were very frightened and they didn’t want to eat. It has taken a while, but now their appetite is back to normal – 10–18 kg of bamboo a day, plus milk, carrots, apples and steamed buns.

Six pandas escaped during the earthquake, and sadly, two of them are still missing. They may now be dead, but keepers hope they have escaped into the wild and that they will return to the reserve, because they are very close to their keepers.

The eight pandas at Beijing zoo are two years old. D

Henry James is one of America's greatest novelists, and the author of The Turn of the Screw, a well-known short ghost story, published in 1898. It is a story that many people have made into films and operas. One of the best operas is one written by Benjamin Britten in the mid twentieth century.

The book is about a governess who looks after two children in a house which has no near neighbours. The story is both haunting and frightening. The children, Flora and Miles, are charming to their teacher, but when she starts to see the figures of a man and woman in the gardens, she begins to believe that supernatural forces possess them, and will lead to their destruction. The reader and the listener sometimes wonder if the governess is mad, because both author and composer cleverly leave a lot of room for the reader’s / listeners’ own terrible thoughts and ideas.

Ghost stories and music have a similar effect on us. The best ghost stories try to get into our minds, and music has the power to go past our conscious thought and appeal directly to our feelings and emotions. So the terrifying production that opened last night at Covent Garden Opera House is successful for two reasons: first because it has a great author and composer, and second because your imagination takes over from your sensible mind.

Example:

The story takes place in a haunted castle. F

41.Henry James and Benjamin Britten worked together on The Turn of the Screw.

42.Flora and Miles are brother and sister.

43.Miles and Flora die at the end of both the novel and the opera.

28

44.The author doesn’t give all the details in the story, so the reader has to imagine some of them.

45.The best supernatural tales have something in common with music.
