Poland to review new nato plan

Poland's defence minister said last Monday he would propose changes to a 15-year plan for adapting Poland's army to NATO standards which the cabinet could discuss this month or next. The amendments were necessary because the previous scheme had been prepared by the previous government when NATO membership talks were far less advanced. "We want the government to discuss the programme while we are still in June, but possibly there will be some delay due to budget discussions," he told a news conference.

The Polish government was due to start talks on the macroeconomic assumptions of next year's budget. It has to submit the full budget draft to the lower house of parliament by September 30.

Poland, with the Czech Republic and Hungary, expected to formally become a member NATO. The Polish defenсe minister said that spending on the military could not be increased above levels envisaged in the original 15-year scheme because Poland had to carry out costly social security and health service reforms over the next few years.

The plan envisages that government spending on military equipment would grow four times over 15 years. It also assumes a reduction of troops by 40,000 to 180,000 and the sale of a part of military infrastructure.
