Unit II. Gerundial Constructions

The gerund may form gerundial constructions in which the gerund is proceeded by the possessive or personal pronoun in the objective case or by the noun in the common or genitive case.

Gerundial constructions have the same syntactical functions as gerunds:

Subject:

His getting divorced astonished everybody.

Object:

She is thinking of his getting married.

Attribute:

That may have been one of the reasons for her being so noisy.

Part of a compound nominal predicate:

It was your doing, Harry.

Adverbial modifier:

She could never look at the child without the tears coming into her eyes. (of manner)

The dress was made for Kate wearing it at her birthday party. (of purpose)

Gerundial constructions are normally translated into Russian by means of subordinate clauses.

Ex.1. Read and translate the following sentences. Pay attention to the syntactical function of the gerundial construction.

His being a foreigner, an ex-enemy was bad enough.

Her getting married caused much grief to her family.

His constant smoking in bed irritated his wife.

The only escape was our leaving the town at once.

Sometimes people who are in good health think they have cancer and won’t live another year and that can lead to their taking their own life.

The children enjoyed playing with you and you were very kind in your playing with them.

We have great hopes of his doing well in the future.

Her thoughts were interrupted at last by the door opening gently.

In spite of his coming in time we could not start at once.

She was a motherly soul and insisted on his taking a cup of tea with the family.

Who said anything about anybody trying to do him in?

That would prevent people’s noticing.

I couldn’t walk around the deck without his joining me.

You don’t mind my asking that, do you?

It was her proposing to sacrifice the whole world for me.

I remember you coming and taking her out once.

Her secretary seemed to say something about her having gone on a safari in East Africa.

The play is not so bad but I can’t imagine anyone wanting to see it three times.

Ex.2. Turn the bracketed part of the sentence into the gerundial construction.

It is bad enough (Richard, fail) at the exam.

It is no use (you, tell) me not to worry.

She was not aware of (her sister, marry) a famous pianist.

Do you mind (I, ask) you one question?

He did not approve of (the children, dream).
