In the area of Ukraine, changes of zonal ecosystems during the main development stages of Pleistocene and Holocene have been reconstructed on the evidence of paleosol and pollen data. Criteria, based on paleoecosystem information, are proposed in order to substantiate the division of Quaternary development stages of Ukraine into short-period time units. A methodological model for the reconstruction of short-period paleoecosystem changes is developed. A classification of Quaternary zonal ecosystems in Ukraine has been elaborated. A series of schematic maps has been made which show the changes of Quaternary zonal paleoecosystems in Ukraine.

General palaeoclimatic trends in the development of zonal landscapes during the warm Pleistocene stages and during the Holocene are shown, as well as the individual characteristics of paleoecosystem succession for different stages. The implementation of paleoecosystem reconstructions in the study of modern geosystems, in Quaternary stratigraphy, in archaeology and for the prediction of future climatic change (under the impact of natural factors) are proposed.
