17. International Organizations. Un role in cont. World.

People set up different organizations for various purposes. Nowadays become more and more popular to enter some organizations. Unfortunately some people do this only for fame, but other really want to be helpful. For instance, Angelina Joli, Princess Diana.

First of all I’d like to say the an international organization is an organization with an international membership, scope, or presence. There are two main types: International nongovernmental organizations (INGOs): non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that operate internationally. These may be either:

1. International non-profit organizations. Examples include the World Organization of the Scout Movement, International Committee of the Red Cross. International corporations, referred to as multinational corporations. Examples include The Coca-Cola Company and Toyota.

2. Intergovernmental organizations, also known as international governmental organizations (IGOs): the type of organization most closely associated with the term 'international organization', these are organizations that are made up primarily of sovereign states (referred to as member states). Notable examples include the United Nations (UN), Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Council of Europe (CoE), European Union, and World Trade Organization (WTO). The UN has used the term "intergovernmental organization" instead of "international organization" for clarity.

The United Nations Organization (UNO) or simply United Nations (UN) is an international organization whose stated aims are facilitating cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and the achieving of world peace. The UN was founded in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations, to stop wars between countries, and to provide a platform for dialogue. It contains multiple subsidiary organizations to carry out its missions. There are currently 192 member states, including nearly every sovereign state in the world. From its offices around the world, the UN and its specialized agencies decide on substantive and administrative issues in regular meetings held throughout the year. The organization is divided into 6 administrative bodies, primarily: the General Assembly; the Security Council; the Economic and Social Council; the Secretariat; the International Court of Justice. The Court has its place in the Hague, Netherlands. All other organs are based in New York.

Additional bodies deal with the governance of all other UN System agencies, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The UN's most visible public figure is the Secretary-General, currently Ban Ki-moon of South Korea, who attained the post in 2007. The organization is financed from assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states, and has six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

Now I’m not a member of any organization, but I’d like to join some because I share their views, respect and admire their deeds and want to be helpful. For example I would join Reg Cross and Greenpeace.
