Grammar Tutorials 1: Tenses; Irregular Verbs

14.1. Study the fragments from the article: “A Few Positive Words”. Comment on the underlined grammar peculiarities. Find in the text and put down the sentence or sentences illustrating the main idea of the text.

I entered university and everything was sailing along smoothly when my boyfriend broke up with me. Devastation took precedence over university work and I was having trouble coping. When the university called to say I needed to hand in an assignment the next day or fail the subject I was completely taken aback. I didn’t even know about the assignment as I had not attended classes for weeks. I couldn’t complete an assignment in one night so I went to see the lecturer of that subject. I started to make an excuse when he stopped me and said ‘Rebecca, all I want to do for you is make you the best teacher you possibly can be’.

The words still echo in my ears and, in that moment, I realised that this is what I really want. A few positive words changed my world. I hope that one day I can touch the life of another the way he touched mine.

Sincerely Yours,

Rebecca Burke, Australia.
