Unit 5. Work Attitudes.

Study the vocabulary.

commitment – обязательство

dependability – надёжность

faithful – верный, преданный

honesty – честность

in particular – в частности

loyalty – лояльность, преданность

own – собственный

responsibilities – обязанности

to cheat – обманывать

to communicate – передать, сообщить

to remain – оставаться

There are many ways to communicate a positive attitude to your work such as listening attentively to instructions, asking questions if necessary and showing initiative. Initiative means being ready to do a little more than your own job. Commitment to work is an attitude deeply rooted in many cultures. Commitment to job responsibilities comes from belief that a good person is hard-working. An employee shows it in many ways. These ways are dependability, loyalty and honesty. Dependability means your ability to be trusted by other people and, in particular, by your employers. Honesty means speaking truthfully and not cheating the employer in any way. Loyalty means remaining faithful to your job.

Exercise 1. Match the words with their definitions.

Exercise 2. Put the words into the correct order to make a sentence.

Exercise 3. Answer the questions on the text.

Exercise 4. Use a dictionary and choose the synonym to the underlined word in each sentence.

Exercise 5. Work in pairs. Role-play for the following situations.

  1. You are scheduled to work on Saturday. Ask one of your co-workers to switch shifts with you. Explain to your colleague why you can’t work your shift. Mind that your colleague is not very happy about working on Saturday, too, but finally agrees to help you.

  2. One of your co-workers has asked if you could work for him on Saturday. You really don’t want to. Be polite but refuse.

  3. A co-worker keeps going up to your desk and borrowing things such as pens, rulers and suchlike. You don’t mind sharing, but this co-worker never returns things and you are tired of asking him to give your things back to you. Express your dissatisfaction.

  4. Your best friend had a birthday party and you spent most of the night at the party celebrating. The next morning you feel so exhausted that you can’t possibly see how you can go out of bed, let alone go to work. Call work and explain why you won’t come in.
