Цель изучения: познакомиться с экономической и социальной структурами страны, охарактеризовать период капитализма 20 века.

Изучив данную тему, студент должен:

- знать

• Особенности экономической структуры страны;

• Экономические изменения в период с конца 20 века;

• Особенности социальной структуры страны;

- уметь:

• Характеризовать экономическое состояние страны в 20-м и 21 веках;

• Пользуясь справочной литературой, подготовить доклад о современном экономическом положении страны.

1. The Civil War (1861 – 1865) – the war settled the question of whether the United States should remain one political unit or split into two. The people newly arrived from Europe had nearly all settled in the North and could easily identify themselves with the northern position. To them the South was like a foreign country, and their share in the victory made it possible for them to have a greater consciousness of being American.

2. Ethnics – people who are still strongly identified with a national origin other than northwestern European.

3. Declaration of Independence – written by Thomas Jefferson and proclaimed the independence of the 13 American colonies from Britain.

4. Hispanics – people of Spanish origin.

5. The Great Lakes – Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario

6. The Great Salt Lake – is in the northwest of the state of Utah, close to Salt Lake City.

7. Independence Day – the main national holiday. Celebrated on the 4^th of July.

8. Midwest – the northeastern part of the United States except for the states close to the Atlantic.

9. New England – the thirteen original states of two hundred years ago.

10. Pilgrim Fathers – English Puritans, who landed at Cape Cod, near Boston, in 1620.

11. Rocky Mountains – the system of parallel mountain ranges stretches down the western side of North America from Alaska to New Mexico.
