Play the Alphabet Job game:

Student A says a job beginning with ‘a’. Student B says a job beginning with ‘b’, etc.

Which letters of the alphabet could you not find jobs for?

  1. Listening for gist

1). Listen to three speakers (IO pI: 30). What are their jobs?

2). Listen to five speakers (PT for RSE: T5 B1).

Match the texts with the statements A-F. Each letter is used only once. One statement is odd.

  1. Her job gives her a chance to meet people.

  2. She thinks she should be paid more for the work she does.

  3. Her job doesn’t leave her with much free time.

  4. She’s thinking of trying to find a completely different job.

  5. She doesn’t have a good relationship with the people she works with.

  6. She has to travel a lot for her job.

3). Listen to six speakers (SL: U12 A52). Match each speaker with a job.

3. Listening for details

1). Listen to three speakers (IO pI: 30) once again. Note which speaker:

A. has a very stressful job.

B. has never had a day off through illness.

C. works nights.

D. dropped out of school.

F. has made loads of money.

G. works outdoors.

H. works long hours.

2). Listen to three speakers (PT for RSE: T5 B1) once again. Note which speaker:

A. runs his/her own business.

B. knows a lot of residents.

C. arranges meetings.

D. designs websites.

E. lives out of a suitcase.

3). Listen to longer extracts of the people's descriptions (SL: U12 C52) and decide if they are true or false. Be careful! The extracts are in a different order this time.

4) Listen to the same six people talking about their skills and experience (SL: U12 D53). Decide which statement, A or B, is true for each speaker.
