Topic 2. Choosing a career

  1. Warm-up

Pair work: Have you ever thought of having a job your parents do?

  1. Listening for gist

1). Listen to five speakers (PT for RSE: T8 B1).

Match the speakers with the statements A-F. Each letter is used only once. One statement is odd.

A. Making a lot of money is the most important thing for me.

B. I will probably do the same job as one of my relatives.

C. I want to continue with my education for a long time.

D. I’m hoping I can travel a lot in my career.

E. Being famous really appeals to me.

F. I am planning to work with children when I’m older.

2). Listen to six students (LS: U2 E). For each speaker decide which questions they are answering: A or B.

A. What are you going to do when you leave school?

B. Would you like to do the same job as your parents?

What jobs were mentioned?

3. Listening for details

Listen to five speakers (PT for RSE: T8 B1) once again. Note which speaker:

  1. wants to follow his relative’s steps.

  2. wants to go on business trips.

  3. wants to do a research.

  4. wants to be on TV

  5. wants a satisfying job.

1) Read these sentences and then use the words in bold to complete the sentences below.

I don't get a salary each month; I get 10% commission on every computer I sell.

I sent off the application form for that job at the bank, and I've just heard they want me to come for an interview.

Choosing a job
