Role-play the dialogue checking the meaning of any unfamiliar term.

More Information

  • What must you do when you use a new disk?

  • When you use a new disk, you can put a label on the outside of it. This label will help you identify its contents.

  • How is an internal name you give each of your disks called?

  • You can also give each of your disks an internal name, called a volume label. So, make sure that you labeled your disks.

  • What kind of device is a disk drive and what is it used for? What device can you compare the disk drive with?

  • Disk drive1 is an electromechanical device that writes data to a magnetic disk and reads data from the disk; it spins disks and tapes at a specified speed. The term disk drive refers to the entire peripheral unit such as disk drive or tape drive. Think of a disk drive as a cassette recorder.

  • How are disk drives referred to?

  • Floppy disk drives are commonly referred to as the A drive and the В drive. A hard disk drive is usually referred to as the С drive. A compact disk drive is referred to as the D drive.

  • What does the complete drive name consist of?

  • A complete drive name consists of a drive letter and a colon.

  • For what purpose may you need to type a drive name?

  • When using a command, you may need to type a drive name before your file name. It will tell MS-DOS2 where to find disk that contains your file.

  • How do we call a place in a computer where information is actively used?

  • Memory is the place in your computer where information is actively used. When you run a program, MS-DOS stores that program and the files it uses in the computer's available memory.

  • What kinds of memory do you know?

  • There are different kinds of memory: conventional memory, expanded memory, extended memory, random access memory or RAM, read-only memory or ROM, etc.

  • What can you say about the conventional memory?

  • Conventional memory is the portion of your computer's memory that the computer and operating system can use directly. On an IBM running DOS conventional memory is the first 640 kilobytes of RAM that programs can use.

NB 1drive (1) An electromechanical device that spins disks and tapes at a specified speed. Also refers to the entire peripheral unit such as disk drive or tape drive. (2) To provide power and signals to a device. For example, "this control unit can drive up to 15 terminals." 2MS-DOS (MicroSoft-Disk Operating System) A single user operating system for PCs from Microsoft. It is functionally identical to IBM's PC-DOS version, except that starting with DOS 6, MS-DOS and PC-DOS each provide different sets of auxiliary utility programs. Both MS-DOS and PC-DOS are called DOS.

7.20 A) Study the direction below & make up your instruction.

Writing Instructions

  • When writing instructions (e.g. how to prepare a dish), you should give the reader detailed information in the right chronological order. Sentences should be short, clear and simple. Each stage of instructions is usually placed on a new line.

  • Sub-headings can be used to describe the various stages. Alternatively, we can number each piece of information. To link one piece of information with another you can use sequence words such as: first, then, next, as soon as, after that, but and until, or expressions such as: make sure, wait, remember, be careful, do not, you should. You should use the imperative when writing instructions.

b) Read the instruction below in which everything is mixed up. Put it in order.

T hen put them in the dishwasher. Finally, close the door of the dishwasher. Make sure the door is securely closed. First, rinse the dirty items. Remember to fill the compartment on the inside of the dishwasher door with the right amount of dishwashing powder. Then, close the compartment lid. You should place the dishes and glasses in the appropriate areas. When the machine has stopped, let it cool down for fifteen minutes before removing the clean dishes. Finally, to open the door, first push the handle up, then pull. While the machine is on, do not attempt to open the door until the programme has finished. After you have selected the appropriate programme, activate the machine by pressing the "on" button.

c) Imagine you’ve bought a new device for your computer or a household appliance. Make up an instruction to it (about 10 sentences).
