Compound adjectives have two parts and are usually written with a hyphen: red-haired, green-eyed.

They are formed with:

  • Present participles a smart-looking man, a sharp-cutting knife

  • Past participles: a much-liked colleague, a well-known singer

  • Cardinal numbers + nouns a one-month holiday, a seventy-mile speed limit, a three-year degree

  • Prefixes and suffixes anti-social behaviour, a part-time worker

  • Badly, ill, poorly, well + past participle a badly-treated animal, a well-established firm

  • used to describe:

  • physical appearance: broad-shouldered, dark-haired, good-looking

  • personality: good-tempered, open-minded, ill-bred

  • places: built-up, run-down, wide-open

  • everyday objects: worn-out, hand-made, man-made

Make compound adjectives to describe the following.

Adjectives: Word Order

Sometimes we use several adjectives together:

In the kitchen there was a beautiful large round wooden table.

There are 2 kinds of adjectives: fact adjectives: new, large, round, wooden

opinion adjectives: nice, interesting, beautiful, etc.

Sometimes there may several fact adjectives: large round wooden, etc.
