Attention and memory

Holly Brisbone

Ercina, California

I.Every moment the five 1. s…nses are bombarded with information. Right now as you are 2. r…ding is a good example. You see the 3. w…rds on the page. At the same time you are also aware of such things as the size, 4. sh…pe, and color of the book and the amount of light in the room. You can probably hear pages being 5. t…rned and perhaps someone walking in the hall, or a fly buzing around the room. You may be able to smell lunch being prepared in the cafeteria or fresh wax on the floor. Your skin-is telling you if your new pants are still rough, that the paper of the book is smooth, and maybe that you have a small rock in your shoe. Perhaps you can even still taste the cherry( cough drop you popped in your mouth before class.

II. Fortunately, you are able to block out 6. …. of this sense information and focus only on the book. You 7. … concentrate. A baby is unable to 8. … so. The infant's attention 9. … from one thing to the next. As children mature, they begin to be able to 10. … most of the information their senses provide and concentrate on one item of interest. One- to three-year-olds have short attention, spans.

III. Without memory, there 11. … no learning. If an experience left no impression, it 12. … improve future behavior. A child 13. … to a situation by depending on experiences with similar situations in the past. A one-year-old who was frightened by a dog may 14. …of all animals for a time. A three-year-old can remember the particular dog and compare it with others 15. … their character. The comfortable familiarity of parents is one of a baby's earliest memories. By age two, a toddler has a fairly good memory. A two-year-old can deliver simple messages. The child remembers a parent who has been absent several weeks, repeats bits of favorite stories, and can relate experiences after returning from a walk. The three-year-old remembers simple commands, uses numbers as if counting (though fourteen may come after six), names most colors, and can indicate his or her age.
