  1. Read and translate the text: college. My future profession

Every year many young people enter higher educational establishments. At the institutes and colleges a new life begins. It is the life of the adult who is responsible for all his actions.

Some students live with their relatives, but those who came from other towns and cities live at the hostel.

Before I start talking about my future profession I'd like to tell you about our college. I study at the college of Economics and Law. Our college was founded in 1920. It is an old building with beautiful columns. There are two departments at college: the Economic department and the department of Law and Technology. More than 600 students attend day departments and more than 300 get extra-mural education. In future they will work as accountants, lawyers, cooks, merchants, customs officers and waiters.

Students of our college have two terms in the academic year. At the end of each term they have some credit tests and take examinations.

To be a good specialist means to study at college from the very beginning till the day of graduation. I know that I shall need deep knowledge in my future work.

The course of studies at our college is two-three and a half years. During this period we get basis of theoretical and practical knowledge on different subjects. More than 50 qualified tutors work at our college.

As for me I am a first-year student at the Economic department. I shall be a merchant/ a customs-house officer. My future profession is very popular now.

We study such subjects as management, marketing, commodity research of food and manufactured goods, organization of trade.

Students of my group attend lectures, practical classes and seminars. Besides they work in the reading halls, it helps them to increase their knowledge and widen their outlook.

Jorge: Hey, Marta! Have you finished the exam?

Marta: Yes, I have, Whew!

Jorge: Was it hard?

Marta: Well, yes. It was hard — pretty hard.

Jorge: Did you pass?

Marta: I don't know. Mrs.Nadler didn't tell me.

Jorge: What questions did she ask?

Marta: First she asked me what my name was.

Jorge: That was easy, wasn't it?

Marta: Yes, except I couldn't remember! Then she asked me where I came from and how long I'd been studying here at the institute.

Jorge: And what else did she ask?

Marta: She asked when I had begun taking English, and she asked how I would use English in the future.

Jorge: Yes, yes, go on.

Marta: Then she asked me if I liked the institute and if I lived with my parents.

Jorge: Anything else?

Marta: I'm trying to remember, Jorge. Oh, yes! She asked if I spoke any other languages.

Jorge: Is that all?

Marta: Oh, there were a lot of other questions. She asked me what my hobbies were, and she asked me to tell her about them. Then she gave me a picture and asked me to describe it. Then I was asked to read a passage.

Jorge: I hope that’s all.

Marta: To my mind it was one of the most difficult exams in my life. But I think I did well at this exam.
