Грейся, если тебе нравится. Я не могу целый день сидеть дома. Мне нужны впечатления. Вот я и хочу посмотреть, что там делается. А заодно и снег почищу.
Мег осталась у огня и продолжала читать «Айвенго», а Джо с присущей ей энергией принялась расчищать от снега дорожки в саду….
Сад и живая изгородь служили своеобразной границей между домами Марчей и Лоренсов. Оба дома находились в пригороде; несмотря на близость городских улиц, тут царила сельская идиллия с рощами, лужайками, большими садами и тишиной. Старый кирпичный дом Марчей давно не ремонтировался и сейчас, зимой, когда цветники и зелень сада не украшали двора, а густой плющ не увивал облупившейся кладки, выглядел довольно убого. Зато по другую сторону живой изгороди высился каменный дом столь внушительного вида, что, едва взглянув на него, можно было с уверенностью сказать: жизнь хозяев протекает в роскоши и комфорте. Во дворе находился огромный каретный сарай, а к ухоженному саду прилегала оранжерея. На окнах виднелись дорогие портьеры, за которыми угадывались богато и изысканно обставленные комнаты. И все же этому благополучному строению чего-то не хватало. Такое впечатление производит каждый дом, если он поминутно не оглашается детскими криками, и в окне, или на пороге, или в саду не показывается то и дело мать, с радостью и тревогой следящая за возней своих отпрысков. В парадное добротного дома Лоренсов редко входили гости. Казалось, дед и внук большую часть времени проводят друг с другом.
Этот странный дом давно будоражил воображение Джо. А так как недостатком воображения она не страдала, он представлялся ей сказочным заколдованным замком. За закрытым парадным мерещилось множество тайн - Джо очень хотелось побывать там. Кроме того, она давно решила подружиться с Лоренсом-младшим, теперь же, после новогоднего бала, ей захотелось этого еще больше. Джо чувствовала, что и Лори не прочь продолжить знакомство, но, видимо, не знает как или стесняется сделать первый шаг.
