Но тетушка Марч привыкла действовать без обиняков и, отдав категорическое приказание не любить мистера Брука, побудила Мег внезапно испытать то, на что, быть может, потребовались бы недели, месяцы и даже годы.
Не успела Мег услышать слова тетушки, как ощутила, что симпатия к мистеру Бруку переходит в стойкое и неистребимое чувство.
А мне и думать нечего, тетушка, - возмущенно возразила она. - Мне не нужны ваши деньги. И замуж я выйду за того, кого люблю.
Ну и ну! - свирепо отозвалась старая леди. - Так-то вы, мисс, слушаете мои советы! Ничего, ты еще горько пожалеешь об этом. Только когда ты поймешь, что счастья не бывает в хижине бедняка, будет поздно.
Ну, тетушка, в собственном доме, даже если он очень красивый и удобный, тоже можно быть несчастным, - отразила удар Мег.
Тетушка надела очки и ошеломленно уставилась на племянницу. Никогда еще она не слышала от Мег ничего подобного, да Мег и сама удивлялась своей решимости и независимости. Удивлялась и одновременно гордилась, что так смело защитила Джона и свое право связать с ним жизнь, если действительно полюбит его. Тут даже тетушка Марч поняла, что повела себя не так, как надо, и, спохватившись, решила переменить тактику.
- Ну, Мег, - как можно более вкрадчиво сказала она, - я тебя прошу только успокоиться и подумать над тем, что я тебе сказала. Мне просто не хочется, чтобы ты с самого начала испортила себе жизнь. Тебе нужно выйти замуж за состоятельного человека. Ты не должна думать только о себе. Тебе нужно помочь семье.
Такого тетушка совершенно не ожидала. Она давно уже вознамерилась облагодетельствовать Мег выгодным замужеством, поправить тем самым дела разорившегося родственника и, в довершение всего, закатить на свои средства пышную свадьбу, о которой потом говорил бы весь город. И вот весь этот замечательный план рушится. Нужно ли удивляться, что радужное настроение, с коим тетушка ехала навестить мистера Марча, уступило место раздражению!
- Ну что ж, - свирепо проговорила она, - ты меня убедила. Должна только заметить тебе, что такой упрямой девчонки я не встречала никогда в жизни. Учти, ты теряешь много больше, чем думаешь! Ты меня очень разочаровала, и с твоим отцом мне что-то не хочется сегодня видеться, - добавила тетушка, с трудом поднимаясь на ноги. - И еще учти, - проговорила она уже на ходу, - никакого подарка к свадьбе тебе от меня не будет! Пускай друзья этого твоего мистера Рука заботятся о тебе. А между нами, милочка, все кончено!
