 Commentary

Agatha Christie’s novels present a fine combination of two styles - literary and colloquial. They are loved by the readers not only for their breathtaking plot and skillfully created characters but also for the good language material which can be helpful for those who study English. The dialogues, presented in Agatha Christie’s novels, imitate real life conversations; they contain few slang and jargon words (which soon become obsolete), and can be widely used to enlarge one’s vocabulary.

The novel “Why didn’t they ask Evans” was written in 1934. It is easily read and can be enjoyed by anyone who loves Agatha Christie’s works. The novel begins with a description of a game of golf which is full of special terms. Some readers can find it rather difficult fo understanding that is why it is reasonable to give the translation of these terms and say some words about the game itself and its rules.

Golf is a game for two or more players (but not more than 4 or 5). The number of players in one game is limited because of the time the game takes. Sometimes it takes several days to finish one game.

The players should hit (in turn) a small hard round ball with a special golf club. The ball must get into one of the eighteen holes of the golf field. The winner is the one who makes the ball get in all the holes with a minimum number of hits. The average number of hits is about 72. The full game consists of two rounds.

It is rather difficult to make your ball get into the hole because the surface of the golf field is uneven, full of ditches, pits, pools of water and sometimes covered with bushes.

Each player has several different golf clubs which are used for different kinds of blows. The clubs are carried in a special bag or a golf trolley.
