Introduction

English prepositions are usually short, pesky words that we hardly notice. These words are also troublesome because most of them are not explained by rules. In most cases, one simply has to remember which preposition goes with a certain headword and which goes before which object.

The practice book “Prepositions in the English Sentences” consists of Part one, Part two, Part three, Revision section and A glossary of prepositional phrases.

Part one invites students, as a warm-up-exercise section, to test themselves and see their own stock knowledge. Part two presents activity one and activity two exercises in which learners have either to choose one right preposition out of three or fill in the blanks with appropriate prepositions. Part three is divided into activity blocs which include a set of three exercises in each bloc. Students have to fill in the gaps, translate the sentences from Ukrainian into English using prepositional phrases and replace each word/ phrase with the phrasal verb or prepositional phrase. Revision section offers further activities aimed at prepositions practice in the English sentences. A glossary of prepositional phrases is a practical advisor for the students.

This practice book is intended for the students of International Relations school, intermediate to upper-intermediate learners who wish to gain practice in this area of the English language. It is for class and self study. The arrangement of the book enables the learners to cover the material either in a systematic way, exercise by exercise, or in a selective one, since the activity sections are self-contained.
