My Weekend

Every person whether an adult or a teenager cannot work all the time and needs to have a rest. Usually all the people have a little rest during their weekends. I am not an exception. I really enjoy relaxing and having fun with my friends. Starting from Wednesday I begin to look forward to the

weekends.

My weekend usually starts on Friday afternoon. I come back from my Institute, throw my bag into the corner and go to meet my friends. I haven’t seen them for five days, so I missed them very much.

On Friday we usually go to the city centre. We go to a pizzeria or a café, and then we go to the cinema and watch there a new film. We usually like to watch comedies. But sometimes we go to a party or to the disco because we like dancing very much.

On Saturday mornings and afternoons I usually help my mother to do some work about the

house. My mother usually cooks and I clean our flat. I dust, vacuum the carpets, water the plants and wash the clothes.

Saturday evenings I like to spend in a company of my best friend Ann. If the weather is fine, we usually do not stay indoors. We like nature and are fond of walking.

Usually we go to the park which is near our house. It is very pleasant to walk there. We enjoy the fresh air and the beautiful scenery around us. While walking we usually discuss the books we have read, the films we have watched recently and ask each other a lot of questions about our life, work and studies. If the weather is rainy and gloomy, we stay at home and watch TV, listen to the music. But our favourite past time is playing computer games. If we had more free time we could play them all day long.

On Sunday I don’t have to hurry anywhere, that’s why, I get up at ten or eleven o’clock. I am not an early riser. On Sunday I can read the book, play computer games, surf the Internet or look through the fresh press. Then I get ready for the coming Monday. I do my home tasks, pack my bag, and iron my clothes. The rest of the day I spend with my family. It has become our tradition to have

84

family dinner on Sundays. Then we go to the sitting room and watch TV, read books or discuss the latest news.

Once or twice a month I do something special on weekends: visit an art exhibition, go to the theatre or to the concert either in my native town or in Rostov-on-Don.

Sometimes when the weather is nice our family goes on a picnic.

The Weekend

Most people in Britain work five days a week from Monday to Friday. Schools, colleges and universities are closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Weekend starts on Friday evening when people leave work and wish each other a nice weekend.

Those who work away from home may go home. Some people go away for the weekend. They stay in a hotel or boarding house in the country or at the sea.

People who stay at home at the weekend try to relax, enjoy themselves. On Friday night people like to go to a bar for the happy hour, or the theatre. Nowadays it is not "in" to go to all-night parties, they get up early on Saturday morning. Saturday morning is the time for cleaning the house, washing the car, doing the laundry. Women usually do housework, sewing and gardening.

Saturday morning is a busy time for shopping. On weekdays shops close between 5.30 and 6 p.m. (They're closed on Sundays.) The shops in the centre of big cities usually close at one in the afternoon.

At about one o'clock people go out for lunch. After lunch they go for a walk or do some sports. On Saturday afternoon sporting events take place – football, horse-racing, rugby, cricket and other sports. People either go and watch or sit and watch the sports programmes on television.

Saturday evening is the favourite time for going out: parties, dances or theatre, maybe pictures. Some people like to go to watch a band.

Church bells are a typical feature of an English Sunday morning. On Sunday morning most people stay in bed till 9 o'clock. Then they have a cup of tea or coffee. They look through the newspapers. Reading Sunday papers is one of numerous traditions in Britain. There are quite a number of papers which are published weekly on Sundays.

After breakfast most people go for a walk or to the local pub. Usually men go to the pubs alone and their wives and children prepare for brunch.

At one or 1.30 people have brunch. It is a good time for all the family, when grandparents, parents and children go out to some restaurant and spend an hour or two over brunch. Brunch is a huge meal. They have all sorts of salads, vegetables, chicken, cold meat, pies, fruit, coffee, pudding.

86

Sunday evenings are rather quiet. Most people prefer to stay at home and watch television or just get ready for Monday. So they usually have an early night.

17. Answer the following questions:

1.How long is a week in Britain? 2. When does the weekend start in Britain?

Dialogue 3

-We start at 9.00 a.m. We have two 15-minute coffee breaks.
