Cover the text of Exercise 75. Look at the pictures and the list of verbs and try to retell the story.

Oral Activity 11 (Chain story)

“An Exciting Weekend”. The teacher divides the class into two teams, then writes the word list on the board and explains the new words to the students. He / she starts the story and invites the teams in turn to continue it. Each correct sentence gets 1 point. The team which fails to continue the story doesn’t get a point.

Word list: go shopping, see somebody stealing, shout loudly, catch the thief, leave bag

on bus, run down the road, give back the bag, hear someone screaming,

neighbour’s house on fire, telephone fire-station, put the fire out.

Write a letter to a friend about how you spent your weekend. (80 – 100 words).

UNIT 5 USED TO FOR PAST HABITS

Used to + verb

Examples: I used to play the guitar.

They used to practise every day.

Past habit / present habit

Example: I used to get up at six o’clock but now I get up at seven o’clock.

Ex. 78. Andy Newman, the famous basketball player has retired from world-class

basketball. Look at the list below. What things do you think he used to do?

What do you think he still does?

Examples: He used to run ten miles before breakfast.

He still writes for Basketball Sports Magazine.

Questions and short answers

Did she use to walk to school? Yes, she did.

Did they use to play football? No, they didn’t.

Ex. 79. Look back at the list in Exercise 78 and make questions and answers about

Andy Newman.

Example:

A: Did he use to run ten miles before breakfast?

B: Yes, he did.

A: Does he do that now?

B: No, he doesn’t.

Example:

A: Did he use to write for Basketball Sports Magazine?

B: Yes, he did.

A: Does he do that now?

B: Yes, he does.

Didn’t use to + verb

Examples: We didn’t use to play tennis at school.

I didn’t use to go to work by bus.

Ex. 80. The Curtiss family have moved from England to Australia.

How are their lives different? Use used to or didn’t use to.

England Australia

The family lived in the city. They live on a farm.

Emma didn’t like school. She likes her new school.

Mr Curtiss was a mechanic. He’s a farmer.

Mrs Curtiss was a typist. She helps on the farm.

Steve Curtiss was unemployed. He’s studying at agricultural college.

They didn’t have a dog. They have three sheep dogs.

Mr Curtiss worked in a garage. Now he works in the open air.

Sally, the baby, cried a lot. She’s much happier.

Emma didn’t have many friends. Now she’s got lots of friends.

Mr Curtiss smoked a lot. He doesn’t smoke at all.

Steve spent his weekends with friends. He helps his father in the fields.

Mrs Curtiss often fell ill. She feels O.K.

They didn’t have an Australian accent. They have strong Australian accent.

The weather in England wasn’t good. In Australia the weather’s wonderful.

They didn’t enjoy life. They enjoy life very much.
