New Year in China

Chinese New Year is celebrated from the 17th of January till the 19th of February only when it`s full moon. Street processions are the most exciting part of the celebration. Thousands of lanterns are being lighted up during the processions to clean the way to the New Year. Chinamen think that a new year is surrounded by the evil spirits. Citizens try to scare these spirits by blowing up Christmas crackers and petards. The New Year in China is a family holiday. Chinaman tends to spend it in a family circle. In the last evening of the year each family gathers together in a living room to eat a festive supper. The supper symbolizes the family unity and of course the unity of living and dead members of a family. Then they eat dishes which they firstly give to spirits of the ancestry. Simultaneously family members have an opportunity to forgive each other’s insults. After the meal no one goes to sleep in order to not miss their happiness.

New Year in Japan

New Year in Japan is celebrated on the 1th of January. In the first moment of a new year Japanese start laughing. They believe that laughing will bring them luck in the coming year. On the first night of the year

it`s a rule to visit a temple. In temples you can hear 108 bell tolls. Each toll makes all bad disappear so it won`t happen again. Japanese put straw on porch to not let evil spirits in. Also they think that straw brings happiness. In houses they put rice flats with tangerines on top of them. Tangerines symbolize happiness, health and longevity. In Japan a Christmas tree is surrounded by exotic plants.

New Year in Australia

The 1th of January is the day when Australians celebrate the New Year. If there is winter in all countries, there is summer in Australia. Consequently it`s very hot in there. So Santa Claus wears a swimsuit while he is giving presents!

Italians throw away old stuff from windows during the last night of the year. There are flowers pots, old chairs, boots and o lot more falling down to land. More stuff you throw away more wealth you will get.

Great Britain

There is the old tradition of celebrating the New Year that is called «Letting in New Year». It consists of opening the back door to let the old year out when clock strikes 12 times and when it`s the final strike the front door is being opened to let the new year in.

There is a New Year custom that used to be a cult. But now it is observed only in villages. Of course it is for fun. Just before the New Year girls and boys draw lotsnames of their fellow-villages, both sexes. Boys get «brides» and girls get «grooms».

From the ancient times there has been one more custom that is still popular in other countries. It`s choosing the king of the night. How do they do it? A proprietress makes a pie and put a bean inside of this pie. Who takes a piece of pie with the bean becomes the king for the whole evening. The king chooses the queen, the retinue and the fool by himself.

There are a lot of different ways of celebrating the New Year. But they are similar in one thing: everybody believe that this night is special? That something incredible is going to happen. Maybe even miracle. We don`t know it for sure, but we have hope. Hope is a thing that keeps us going. It`s not just a fairytale you can feel magic in the air. Just need to open your eyes, look around, smile and never stop believing in miracles. They happen sometimes.
