Church of the Blessed Virgin was situated in the center of a prince's courtyard of Prince Vladimir's city, on Starokievskaya Mountain. Construction of the Church lasted from 989 to 996.

It amazed with its beauty, was decorated with frescos, mosaics, a plenty of marble ornaments and semiprecious stones... Prince Vladimir has allocated the tenth part of his incomes on the maintenance of the Church. That's why it has received the name of Tithe Church. Destiny of the Church is tragic. Mongols have intruded to Vladimir's city through Ljadsky Gate after long siege on December 6, 1240. The Kievers adapted hastily Tithe Church for defence, where they fought to the bitter end until Tatars have brought siege machines ("poroks", with the help of which they beat walls of the construction). Destruction of huge quantity of people under walls of the failed church is described in the annals. So, last defenders of Kiev were lost under ruins. Now the base is laid out with slate tiles outside the Tithe Church, and behind the opsids, where the last defenders of Kiev in 1240 were buried in a communal grave, the memorable cross is established. In 2003 Tithe Church restoration is planned under the decision of administration of a city mayoralty.
