Я досі пам’ятаю, як одного разу наш вчитель розповів нам про вундеркіндів. Досі ми часто вживали це слово, коли хтось навчався краще, ніж інші, та досягав чогось значно більшого, ніж решта учнів. Таким чином ми, звичайні, посередні хлопчики й дівчатка, хотіли виявити свою зневагу і вказати тому, кому в глибині душі все ж таки страшенно заздрили, що він – біла ворона, не такий, як усі, і тому чужий.
Унас у класі навчався хлопчик, дуже слабкий і занадто спокійний. Всі вчителі стверджували, що він має незвичайні таланти і називали його надзвичайною дитиною. Марк мав дар до мов, був генієм у математиці, мав схильність до природничих наук, але в нього добре виходило і з гуманітарних предметів. Мабуть, не було жодної дисципліни, з якою б він не ладнав. Лише з часом ми дізналися, що коли ми всі разом намагалися засвоїти арифметику, Марк вже самостійно працював над геометрією та алгеброю. І чим старанніше ми намагалися запам’ятати чергове правило, тим більше нам здавалося, що йому нудно. Та навіть тоді він залишався старанним і працьовитим, сумлінно відвідував школу, ніколи не прогулював, не зривав уроки, працював із насолодою і ретельністю і весь час щось читав. Ми скаржилися один одному, що він псує нам життя, адже він улюбленець кожного вчителя в школі. Нас дратували його неймовірні досягнення та публічне визнання його талантів. І ось одного разу ми вирішили зробити його життя нестерпним. Ми почали агресивно поводитися, залякувати його, насміхатися. Наша помста іноді переходила від словесних образ до фізичних розправ, за що нас неодноразово сварили і змушували до неприємних розмов із директором. Але ніщо не давало бажаного результату – ми не заспокоювалися.
Раптом ми помітили, що Марк почав пропускати уроки без поважних причин, став байдужим до навчання і навіть почав відставати. З відмінника він перетворився на ледаря, неробу і двієчника. Вчителі були у відчаї, адже здавалося, що Марк почував відразу до навчання.
І от одного дня наш вчитель запитав, що ми знаємо про вундеркіндів. Він розказав, як важко їм живеться під тягарем їхньої самотності, тому що їм немає до кого звернутися за підтримкою, приязню, заохоченням. В них немає відчуття приналежності до якоїсь групи, вони всюди чужі. Родина також не завжди допомагає, адже більшість батьків лише прагнуть реалізувати свої амбіції через своїх диво-дітей. Ми почули про Моцарта, Шуберта, Пікассо і про їхнє трагічне життя. Нам стало соромно.
Зрештою ми подружилися із Марком і дізналися, який він чудовий хлопець. Ми засвоїли цей урок і відтоді більше не сміли осуджувати тих, хто відрізняється від звичайних людей.
