3. A) Comment on the following expressions from the text. Work out other possible variants of their usage.

a) “But then she saw something that struck a very cold fear into her heart…”

to strike terror/fear/awe into smb/smth (cause fear) – наводить ужас, привести в ужас, внушать, вселять страх

eg His appearance will strike terror into his enemies. — Его появление будет вселять ужас во врагов.

b) “ … the door to Mr Tumnus’ house had been torn off its hinges.”

to be torn off its hinges – сорванный с петель

off the hinges (syn. off the hook) — в беспорядке; в расстройстве

(In American slang it means outstanding, great, amazingly good - eg That concert was off the hinges.)

“Mr Tumnus’ house was in a terrible mess.”

in a mess - в беспорядке, вверх дном; в грязи; в передряге.

eg You're so renowned for dropping your best pals when they're in a mess — Всем известно, что ты бросаешь своих лучших друзей, стоит им попасть в какой-нибудь переплет

с) “Not just for her sake but for the sake of Mr Tumnus and Edmund.”

for the sake of; for one's sake (out of consideration for; in the interest of; because of; owing to; in order to please, honour, get, or keep; if you do something for the sake of something, you do it for that purpose or in order to achieve that result) – ради чего-л., кого-л.

for my own sake as well as yours – ради нас.

for old times' sake - в память о прошлом.

for Christ's sake - ради Христа.

god's /goodness' / Heaven's sake - ради Бога.

for conscience' sake - для успокоения совести.

for form's sake - для формы, для проформы.

b) Give translations using the above mentioned expressions:

If something strikes fear into people, it makes them very frightened or anxious.

Одно только упоминание ее имени наводит ужас в душах местных обитателей.

4. A) Read the sentences from the text containing these synonyms. Try and translate them:

“Weren’t you wondering where I was?” Lucy asked. She tried to explain that she had been gone for hours, but the other three looked confused.

She listened with a big smile on her face as Susan asked in a confused voice, “Peter, are your trousers wet?”

Peter and Susan were very embarrassed at the fact that they hadn’t believed Lucy and had thought she was telling lies.

The whole village had been turned to stone. Now, they were doomed. Mr Beaver kneeled, distraught.

b) Point the difference between the following synonyms.

ТО CONFUSE: Смущать, приводить в замешательство, вносить путаницу в мысли человека. Обычно такое замеша­тельство может возникнуть в результате неожиданных или многочисленных вопросов, непривычной обстановки, непод­готовленности к ответу.

*confused (by/with) - смущённый; озадаченный.

eg They asked so many questions that they confused Alice — Они задавали так много вопросов, что Алиса растерялась.

eg Don’t confuse her with too many questions — He сбивайте ее слишком многочисленными вопросами.

eg His unexpected invitation confused Barbara — Его неожиданное приглашение смутило Барбару (она не знала, что ответить).

TО EMBARRASS: Смущать, приводить в замешательство, заставлять человека почувствовать себя неуютно, «не в своей тарелке», лишать уверенности в отношении того, как следует реагировать, как себя вести в возникшей ситуации.

*embarrassed (at/by) - gсмущённый; сконфуженный, сбитый с толку, растерянный.

eg Jake always embarrasses people with his raunchy jokes — Джейк вечно всех смущает своими грубыми шутками.

eg All the people talking at the same time embarrassed the boy — Такое количество людей, говорящих одновременно, привело мальчика в замешательство.

TO BE DISTRAUGHT (at/over/with) - If someone is distraught, they are so upset and worried that they cannot think clearly. ( смятенный, смущенный (чем-л. ) Syn: upset , worried , confused; потерявший рассудок, обезумевший)

eg be distraught with grief - обезуметь от горя

eg Mr Barker's distraught parents were last night being comforted by relatives. – Прошлым вечером родственники успокаивали расстроенных родителей Мистера Бейкера.

NOTE:

TО PUZZLE: озадачивать, приводить в затруднение, ставить в тупик; причиной озадаченности может быть сложная проблема, но чаще имеются ввиду непонятные поступки или слова другого человека, невозможность понять его мотивы.

*to puzzle over smth — ломать (себе) голову над чем-л.

*puzzled (by smth)– озадаченный, недоуменный

eg How he managed to do it puzzles me — Меня ставит в тупик, как ему удалось это сделать.

eg I’m puzzled by what she did — To, что она сделала, выше моего понимания (озадачивает меня, я не понимаю).

eg Don’t puzzle over her words; she never knows her own mind — He ломай голову по поводу ее слов. Она сама никогда не знает, что она хочет (зд. что она имеет в виду).

c) Choose the necessary synonym:
