2. Give the literary translation to the following:

Narnia was exploding into its first spring for 100 years!

Aslan knighted Peter for his bravery.

After talking for some time, Aslan and the Witch returned and Aslan announced, “She has renounced her claim on your brother’s blood.”

3. A) Comment on the expressions from the text. Work out other possible variants of their usage.

a) “Lucy felt giddy when Aslan spoke her name.”

to feel (to be) giddy/dizzy (if you feel giddy, you feel unsteady and think that you are about to fall over, usually because you are not well)- чувствовать головокружение, мутится в голове у кого-л.

eg She felt giddy from the unaccustomed exercise. — У неё закружилась голова от непривычного упражнения.

b) “Peter explained that Edmund had fallen under the Witch’s spell and had betrayed them.”

under a spell (not fully in control of one's thoughts and actions, as though in a state of enchantment) - очарованный, околдованный

to fall under smb’s spell – попасть под чьи-л. чары, быть очарованным

to put smb under a spell / cast a spell over smb - наложить заклятие на кого-л.

to break / remove smb.'s spell — разрушить чьи-л. чары

to cast / put a spell on / over smb. — околдовать, очаровать кого-л.

eg Fall under the spell of smb's charm. - Попасть в сети чьего-л обаяния.

eg The audience was completely under his spell. — Публика внимала ему как зачарованная.

eg They say she died after a witch had cast a spell on her. — Говорят, она умерла после того, как ведьма околдовала её.

c) “Peter and Susan explained that they had both been too hard on Edmund…”

to be hard on smb/smth – 1) treat or criticize (someone) severely 2) be difficult or unfair 3) be likely to hurt or damage

eg Don't be hard on her — Будь с ней помягче.

eg I don't want to be hard on the bugger but I'm going to have to give him a piece of my mind — Я не хотел бы поступать сурово с этим типом, но я должен сказать ему все, что я о нем думаю.

eg This illness is far harder on grownups than on children — Взрослые тяжелее переносят эту болезнь, чем дети.

d) “… he padded slowly towards the Stone Table with a very sad air.”

with an air (of) (an impression of a quality or manner given by someone or something) - с видом

eg He comes to anchor on the hearthrug, with the air of a man in an unassailable position.— Он теперь добрался до коврика перед камином и утвердился там в позе человека, занявшего неприступную позицию.

eg With an air of harsh realism, she told me that we mustn't expect the first prize every week. — Прикидываясь суровой реалисткой, она говорила, что нельзя рассчитывать на первый приз каждую неделю.

with an air of finality - с таким видом, что все кончено, решено; ≈ разговор окончен

eg ‘That, I think, is all,’ said the stranger, with that quietly irresistible air of finality he could assume at will. — Это все, что я хотел сказать вам, - прервал ее приезжий тоном, не допускающим возражений.

a hangdog air (look) - виноватый вид; ≈ с видом побитой собаки

eg He turned and went off with a hangdog air round the side of the house. — Гарри повернулся, побрел с видом побитого пса и скрылся за углом дома.

with an air of abstraction — с отсутствующим видом

with an air of imporatance – важно, с достоинством

with an air of injured innocence — с видом оскорбленной невинности

b) Give translations using the above mentioned expressions:

I felt giddy and had to steady myself.

Luke felt almost giddy with relief.

She answered with a faint air of boredom.

The traditional British breakfast is hard both on wives and on the digestion.

Boys are very hard on their shoes.

Только ни одна девушка на тебя и не глянет, пока у тебя такой разнесчастный вид.
