We introduce reported questions with ask or want to know.
In reported questions, the verb is in the affirmative and the question mark is omitted. verb tenses, pronouns and possessive adjectives change as in statements.
When the direct questions begins with a question word (who, where, when, why, what etc), the reported question begins with the same word.
Direct speech:“Where do you live?” she asked me.
Reported speech: She asked me where I lived.
When the direct question is a yes/no question and begins with an auxiliary verb (do, be etc) or a modal verb (can, will etc), then the reported question begins with if or whether.
Direct speech: “Have you got a pet?” he asked me.
Reported speech: He asked me if/whether I had a pet.
16. Модальные глаголы
Модальность – это отношение говорящего к действительности, выраженное различными языковыми средствами. модальность может быть выражена: грамматически – формой глагола (сравните изъявительное, сослагательное и повелительное наклонения), специальными модальными глаголами can, may, must, should и др., и лексически – при помощи слов и выражений, имеющих модальное значение: evidently очевидно, maybe возможно, probably вероятно и др.
can/could выражает
may/might выражает:
разрешение совершить действие.
возможность, предположение, вероятность совершения действия. В таких случаях глагол may/might переводится на русский язык модальными словами возможно, может быть, не исключено, что или модальным глаголом мочь. Might выражает меньшую степень вероятности совершения действия.
упрек или порицание (в сослагательном наклонении в форме might)
must выражает:
долженствование, моральную необходимость совершить действие. в отрицательной форме выражает запрет.
уверенность в том, что действие совершается или совершилось. В этом случае глагол must переводится на русский язык модальными словами очевидно, должно быть, наверняка, вероятно и т.п.
have/have got
1. Глагол have выражает долженствование, вызванное обстоятельствами. Вопросительная и отрицательная формы образуются с глаголом do. Инфинитив после модального глагола have употребляется с частицей to.
need
Модальный глагол need употребляется в отрицательных предложениях и означает отсутствие необходимости в совершении действия. На русский язык глагол need в отрицательной форме в сочетании с indefinite infinitive переводится не зачем, нет необходимости, с perfect infinitive – не зачем было, не было необходимости, зря/напрасно (это было сделано).
should
Употребляется со всеми лицами единственного и множественного числа и выражает:
совет, пожелания о необходимости совершить или не совершать действия (в сочетании с indefinite infinitive).
упрек, неодобрение, порицание, неудовольствие по поводу того, что действие было или не было совершено (в сочетании с perfect infinitive).
возмущение, недоумение, негодование (в вопросительных предложениях, начинающихся с why).
ought
Модальный глагол ought близок по значение к глаголу should. Он выражает:
совет, пожелание, напоминание о необходимости совершить или не совершать действие (в сочетании с indefinite infinitive).
порицание, неодобрение того, что действие было или не было совершено (в сочетании с perfect infinitive).
После глагола ought инфинитив употребляется с частицей to.
will/would
Модальный глагол will/would выражает:
твердое намерение или желание говорящего совершить какое-либо действие (при употреблении с первым лицом).
упорное нежелание или невозможность совершить действие (в отрицательных предложениях со вторым и третьим лицом). Won’t употребляется, если речь идет о настоящем времени, wouldn’t – по отношению к действию в прошлом.
повторность действия, совершающегося в прошлом (в форме would).
вежливую просьбу совершить действие (в вопросительных по форме предложениях).
to be
Модальный глагол to be обозначает, что действие, выраженное инфинитивом, должно совершиться согласно договоренности, плану, инструкции, распоряжению и т. п. После модального глагола to be инфинитив употребляется с частицей to.
