Цель задания– развитиеустудентовзнанийинавыков,необходимыхдля получения информации в сфере их профессиональной деятельности. Задачи пособия:

выработка навыков фонологически правильной речи; овладение грамматикой английского языка, необходимой для понимания

текстов по специальности; овладение словарным минимумом по специальности.

Задание состоит из 12 уроков. Каждый урок включает два текста из оригинальной литературы и набор лексических, грамматических и фонетических упражнений к ним. Каждый четвёртый урок содержит, кроме того, текст для домашнего чтения.

Помимоучебныхзаданийпособиевключает:описаниезнаковтранскрипции, словарный минимум по специальности, поурочный список грамматических тем и список использованной литературы.

УВАЖАЕМЫЕ ПРЕПОДАВАТЕЛИ И СТУДЕНТЫ!

Данное задание является элементом комплекса учебно-методи- ческих материалов для курса обучения студентов строительных специальностей английскому языку. Комплекс включает в себя:

•учебные задания по каждому из четырёх семестров обучения;

•краткий справочник по грамматике английского языка, Задание состоит из 12 уроков. Каждый урок включает:

•основнойтекстАдлясамостоятельногопереводасословарём;

•вспомогательный текст В для аудиторного перевода без словаря;

•вспомогательный текст С для домашнего чтения (в уроках 4,

8, 12);

•набор лексических, грамматических и фонологических упражнений.

Фонологическая задача пособия – выработка навыков фоно-

логически правильной речи, что подразумевает знание фонетической транскрипции и навыки пользования словарём.

Лексическая задача пособия – овладение минимально-необхо- димым набором общеупотребительной и терминологической лексики по специальности.

На основе частотной дифференциации лексического материала текстов был выделен список высокочастотной лексики и список низкочастотной лексики. Высокочастотная лексика широко использована во всех типах тренировочных и контрольных заданий. Низкочастотная лексика (1-2 употребления на весь текстовой материал) дана

ввиде примечания к тексту с переводом на русский язык. В упражнениях и заданиях она также даётся с переводом. Исключение составляют только фонологические упражнения.

Новая лексика по текстам А и В дается в лексическом упражнении № 1 к соответствующему тексту. Новая лексика по текстам С

восновном содержится в следующим за ним задании. Лексический состав упражнений определяется той, и только той, лексикой, которая уже была представлена в изученных на данный момент текстах.

Новая лексика дана в словаре с указанием текста, в котором она впервые использована.

Грамматическая задача пособия – овладение знаниями грамматики необходимыми для перевода текстов по специальности и навыкамиправильного изложенияих содержаниявответахна вопросы.

Важнейшим принципом работы с грамматикой на первом курсе является последовательное повышение сложности грамматической составляющей текстов. Для снятия трудностей, вызванных незнанием правил грамматики, которые необходимы для правильного перевода текстов,ониподвергалисьобработке.Например,втекстах,предшествующих изучению пассивного залога, было исключено использование подобных конструкций. Грамматические явления не представляющие трудности при переводе, например, инфинитив в функции части сказуемого, могут встречаться в текстах задолго до изучения темы

Инфинитив.

Automatic gearbox/Changing gear without a clutch pedal

The basis for most automatic gearboxes is a set of gears called a planetary or epicyclic gear train. This consists of a sun wheel, planet gears whichrotateroundit,aplanetcarrier,andanouterringgearwhichisknown as an annulus.

The sun wheel is mounted centrally. In the simple epicyclic gear, a pairofplanetsrevolvesonspindlessupportedbytheU-shapedplanetcarrier,

which is mounted on a shaft on the same axis as the sun wheel. As the carrierrotates,theplanetgearsturnontheirspindlesandorbitthesunwheel, with which they mesh. The planet gears also mesh with teeth on the inside of theannulus,whichcanrotatearoundthe sunandplanetgears,alsoonthe same axis.

In order to obtain the required number of gear combinations, an automatic gearbox has two, three or four sets of planets combinedtogether. Somepartsofeachareconnectedtogetherpermanently;othersareconnected temporarily or stopped by a system of brake bands and clutches selected by hydraulic shift valves which are located in the bottom of the gearbox. Oil, under pressure whichoperates the brake bands and clutches, is provided by a pump that draws its supply from the gearbox lubricating oil. Sometimes two pumps are used, driven from the input and output ends of the gearbox.

The gear selector controls the shift valves directly, unless automatic forward drive is selected. Then the operation of the valves is governed by throttleopeningandroadspeed.Withawidethrottleopening,theoilpressure is reduced and the gears stay in a lower gear.

When the car reaches a pre-set speed, a governor allows the pump pressure to take over from the throttle control and a change to a higher gear is made.

Changing gear/What happens when gears are engaged

Thegear wheels in a constant-mesh gearbox can’t all be fixed to their shafts,ornomovementwouldbepossible;sotherehastobeasystemwhich permits all the gear wheels except those that are required for a particular ratiotorunfreely.Usuallyallthegearwheels ononeshaftarefixedtoitand the wheels on the other shafts can revolve around their shaft until a ratio is selected.Then oneof thewheels thatrunfreeislockedto theshaft, andthat pair of wheels can transmit power.

Thelockingof the gearwheels to a shaft is done bycollars, whichare splinedtotheshaft.Thismethodmeansthatthecollarmustrevolvewiththe shaft but it can slide along and lock on to the gear wheels on either side, or remain between them which allows both to spin freely.

Around each collar is a groove that is engaged by a two-pronged fork which is fixed to a slidingrod mounted in the gearbox housing. One, two or three of these selector rods are linked to the gear lever.When the gear lever moves,itcausesaselectorrodtoslidetoorfro.Asitslides,thecollarthatis gripped by the selector fork is slid along the shaft to engage with, or move away from, a gear.

The gear lever which is pivoted at the ball-mountingcan be moved in order to engage the lugs on any of the three selector rods. The central rod slides so as to engage first or second gear, the back rod engages third and fourth gear and the front rod shifts the reverse idler.

Automatic gear controls /Selecting the gears in different designs

An automatic transmission selects and changes gear to suit different speeds and road conditions.

In its simplest form, all that is necessaryto drive a car with automatic gear control is to select forward or reverse gear and accelerate. There are only two pedals – one for accelerating, the other for braking.

All systems have the control-lever positions N for neutral, and most have P for park (which incorporates a locking device). The engine can be started only when the lever is in one of these two positions. R indicates reverse, D is the forward drive position, and L is used in order to hold low gear.Accidentalselectionof park and reverse is prevented bya device such as a mechanical stop. The simplest sequence is PRNDL.

Full throttle gives maximum use of each gear up to the highest safe enginespeed.Whenacceleration is doneatpartthrottlethe drivercancause upward changes (first to second and second to top) at much lower speeds. Thereis alsoakick-downswitchbroughtintoactionwhentheacceleratoris pressed down firmly which immediately initiates a change to a lower gear, providedthatthespeedpermitsthis.Forexample,akick-downchangefrom top to second is usually obtained at 55 mph, but may be prevented by the automatic control when the car is travelling at a higher speed.

In some of the widely used three-speed automatic transmissions, the sequence of gear-selector lever positions is PRND21. When the lever is placed in position 2, the driver obtains automatic changes (up and down) between first and second gears, but top gear is excluded. If the lever is placedin position1, the driver restricts the box tofirst gear.The purpose of this arrangement is to enable maximum engine braking on steep descents.

Economical cruising with overdrive

Overdrive is a unit fitted behind the gearbox to provide an extra gear (higher than top) which allows economical cruising at a reduced engine speed, without reduction of the road speed.

In some cars the overdrive is also effective when third gear is in use (orevenwith secondgear), andso adds to the driver’schoice ofgear ratios.

Most overdrives have an epicyclic gear arrangement that includes a hydraulically operated cone clutch. When the overdrive is not in operation,

the clutch, which is attached to the central sun wheel, is locked by spring pressure to the annulus connected to the output shaft. The planet carrier connected to the gearbox shaft turns the whole unit to give a direct drive.

When the driverselectsoverdrive, theclutch locks to the outercasing andstopsthesunwheelturning.Theplanetcarrieris thendrivenaroundthe sun wheel and in turn drives the annulus at a slightly higher speed than itself. The effect is that the output shaft turns faster than the input shaft.

Overdrives are controlled electricallyor hydraulicallybya dashboard or steering-column switch. Changes can be made while the clutch is not used, but some designs require that the accelerator is immediately lifted when the driverchanges into overdrive, and depressed inorder to operate a kick-down switch when he changes back to direct drive.

Most overdrives cut out automatically below a pre-determined road speed.
