Practical tasks

1.Define the meaning of the Present Tense forms:

I see a man in the street. I like folk music. He always goes to the pub on Friday. He is now working as a teacher. The train is leaving in 5 minutes. John tells me there was a telephone call from you.

2.Say whether the tenses are used relatively or absolutely in the

following Russian and English sentences:

a)Он работает. He works.

Он сказал, что работает. He said he worked.

b) Он работал. He worked.

Он сказал, что работал. He said he had worked.

3.State whether the temporal or modal meaning prevails in ‘shall’ and ‘will’:

None are so deaf as those who will not hear. Winter will come and it will snow. I shall miss my train. Come, you shall have your cup of tea. Will you step in, sir? You will forget all about in a few minutes, I’m sure.

4.State the difference in the grammatical meaning of the Past non- Perfect and the Present Perfect forms:

  1. Where did I put my key? – Where have I put my key?

  2. I lived there for 10 years. – I have lived there for 10 years.

  3. For generations, Sparta produced fearless worriers. – For generations, Nepal has produced brilliant mountaineers.

  1. State what aspective meanings are expressed in these sentences and the way of expression:

The water is boiling. He went on talking. The rain began to fall

heavily. The sun set into a cloud. She stopped smiling at me. I used to have tea in his house nearly every day. He was throwing pebbles into the water.

  1. Compare the meaning of the verbs in the Common and Continuous Aspects:

He read a book that evening. – I was reading a book that evening.

I think this is a good book. – I’m thinking about that book. -

The soup tastes delicious. – She is tasting the soup.

He had fair hair and blue eyes. - They were having a friend that Sunday.
