Practical assignments

1. Define the main features of the noun, the adjective, the verb, the adverb within the 3- criteria principle of dividing words into parts of speech.

2. Explain why the following words are treated as:

nouns: a relative, a walk, a spoonful, a round;

adjectives: long, happier, lovely, motionless;

verbs: to smile, to house.

  1. Consider the syntactical properties of the underlined words. State to what part of speech they belong.

  1. She was sitting at a table with two women friends of hers who

came often to the house. b) We can house you and your friends if the hotel is full.

a)‘Nobody is like us’, Catherine said. b) ‘I like your dress,’ remarked Mrs. Mckee. c) They are as like as two peas.

  1. Define the main features of the functional parts of speech in English:

the article, the preposition, the conjunction, the particle, the

interjection, the modal words.

  1. State which of the underlined words should be treated as a) functional or b) structural. Justify your point of view.

What do you call a novel which has no hero? Irene got up slowly and left the room. She came down with her hat on. But I’ve got some respect for human life, if you haven’t. He heard that the bank had failed which was a sad blow to him.
